Allergic Reactions to Effexor

Posted by jurgen on December 25, 2003, at 11:44:02

Hi,

My daughter had been on Effexor for about 4-5 months when she began developing an allergic reaction, specifically hives. She has been off the medication now for nearly 3 weeks but the hives do not seem do be getting much better. The Allergist assures us it is the Effexor, but now starting to wonder. Has anyone else had a similar experience with Effexor and how long did it take for the hives to finally go away? She has been on a 75mg dose. Thanks.

Jurgen

I had chronic, severe hives for a year and a half and I had no idea what was causing them until my doctor started to transition me from Effexor to Lexapro. The hives started quite some time after I began taking Effexor, so I didn't think that could be the cause. But the hives decreased considerably when I dropped from 300mg to 150mg of Effexor. I am now at 112.5mg of Effexor a day. I no longer get severe hives, and I can go over a day now without any outbreak. (I had to back off of the Effexor slowly because of ugly side effects, so I will be at this dose for another 5 weeks.) I hope this helps. I vaguely remember reading something about the effect of Effexor on something in the brain that controls histimine release (?). So it may be more than an allergic reaction. But I am no expert. Good luck.
