I've just started on 2.5 milligrams of dexedrine twice a day for ADD.
Not feeling anything from it at the moment, is that normal? I know this is a low dose.
My doc is planning to increase to 5 milligrams twice a day.
Does any one know what the normal dose for ADD is?It feels quite strange to be taking Dex because its almost impossible to get prescribed for adults in the UK. I'm quite worried about my pairents finding out. My dad freaked out when I even mentioned the possibility of me taking Dex so I haven't told him.

That is quite a low dose of dexedrine. Is it generic dexedrine? I have found the tablet form of generic dexedrine doesn't work well for me. However the time release spansule seem to do ok. I also take adderall short acting when the time release starts to ware off. If you can tolerate it, be sure to take on an empty tummy and don't eat for at least an hour. Acidic food and drink lower absorption. If you do a search on this hear you will find a lot of info on what to not eat or drink with your medication. Take your vitamin C at night or get a buffered version.
It took about 2 weeks to get my insurance company to let me take dexedrine spansule, all though they let me get dextrostat which is a form of dexedrine. The doc had to write a special letter of need. In my opion dextrostat is much better than the generic tablet.
5mg tablet, but quickly moved up to 10mg. I have a higher tolerance than most.
Hope this helped

Thanks for all the advise BlondGirl.
Once again your advise is really helpful!I don't think there are many options regarding stims here in the UK.
Just getting a prescription if your an adult is a major achievment! I was incredibly lucky to find a Doc who would, and he is very much at odds with most doctors here!
The only stims we have here are dexedrine generic, provigil, ritalin, and ritalin time released, thats it I think.
Its way to early to tell if I respond well, but I'm hoping it works because there aren't many alternatives.

2.5 mg of Dexerine is an EXTREMELY small dose. I was taking 80mg extended release for depression.
I don't think ANYONE could feel the effect of 2.5mg.
Just my thoughts.

My advice is to take the medication exactly as prescribed, and to be totally honest with your doctor. Thats the only way to establish the proper doseage. If the medication gives you a "high" (other than the normal side-affects of psychostimulants), then perhaps the doseage should be lowered. Again, be candid with your doctor. And whatever you do, please don't abuse the medication by taking more to stay up all hours. That road leads to addiction. Taken as prescribed, I believe the meds to be safe and effective.

>Well,I'm FAR from an illegal meth user. I had a TOP research doctor put me back on Dexedrine (I've been on it MANY times throughout the past 12 years because my symptoms include a strong sense of low motivation, etc (and YES I DO live in the USA). Anyway, when the research doc put me back on dexedrine he had me on 10mg spansules 3x daily. I called him up and told him it wasn't working nad that It was making me cry insstead and he said "Then double the dosage." I was so surprised. I just said "oh--ok." And then I was fine. Eventually he added a 4th dose to the mix.
I'd say 80mg was a bit too much - but I'll tell you all this - the weight reduction part wears off 0 I GAINED weight on Dexedrine.

My doctor feels that I was self-medicating when I allegedly used crank, assuming that I ever used it. Anyway, I also have gained weight while on Dexedrine.

Thank you for the info Jerry. You don't have to yell at me though,
as I was in no way implying that you were, I was
just writing about my situation, and I thought from
reading some of these postings that a prescription
for dexedrine would be a logical step for someone
who had had such a problem, not for the weight loss factor, though,
the emotional sense of well-being type thing. Again, thank you for
the info.

Yes Toluened, that's what I was doing long ago, self-medicating. It's surprising about the weight gain
aspect though. I am definitly not interested in
trying to get a script now. God, this is so great
being able to get feedback on this stuff, thanks
dr.Bob for creating this site and for all of you
who participate. Peace.

I don't know what would be considered normal (average?). I think that the maximum recommended dose is about 60mgs/day. I take 60, but only because my new pdoc won't prescribe more. With my last p-doc, I took 120 mgs/day for about two years. His theory was that I wasn't responding at the lower doses because I had to offset a caffiene addiction before getting any therapeutic effects. I was drinking about 3-4 liters of diet coke a day before I started. I wouldn't worry too much about what is "normal" you'll know what is too much and what is not enough. Everybody is different. Good luck.
