Are there any other benefits to taking trazodone for sleep? Can it off set other unwanted side effects from Lexapro? Do you have to worry about serotonin syndrome with Trazodone with an SSRI and Buspar? Does it help with depression?

Trazodone is good for sleep in low doses 50-100 or higher. Higher doses 600 for depression, but rarely used. Standard doses of Lexapro, Buspar, and sleep doses won't lead to any problems

i have been taking trazodone (50mg) every night for sleep for over a year, as ssri's cause insomnia for me. for me it's fabulous, and i have never needed to take more than i do. the first doc who prescribed it for me said that it can block some of the uncomfortable se's some people have on ssri's b/c of a little bit of antagonism of the serotonin 2A receptors. these are the ones thought to cause ssri-induced agitation in some people, and possibly even some of the sexual side effects! i doubt it's just from the trazodone, but i have never had sexual dysfunction from celexa (40mg) or zoloft (150mg). for me it lifted my mood further b/c i was finally getting restful sleep waking up refreshed and calm but not hungover. there is very little risk of serotonin syndrome at doses used for sleep and agitation. i will probably continue it long-term.
best of luck,
liz

Trazodone helped me sleep well however, I got bad nightmares everynight I took it. So I had to stop and they went away. Also, I noticed that my arms would fall asleep very easily everynight and I would wake up with that horrible feeling of a "dead" feeling arm.
I have insomnia due to Abilify side effects which do not seem to be going away. I was taking high doses of benzos when I tried the trazodone. I started at 300mg trazodone then eventually still had problems at 100mg but could not sleep thru the night. Because of these problems I had to discontinue taking the trazodone unfortunately.
That's my experience.
