Paxil or Paxil CR? Need people who've tried both

Posted by theo on November 22, 2003, at 11:19:21

I'm thinking about trying a low dose of Paxil with my Wellbutrin for anxiety. I've got samples of both and was wondering which worked better, the regular or CR version. I'm starting low; 10mg reg or 12.5mg CR, then going to 20mg reg or 25mg CR. I've heard the CR can cause more side effects like diarreah for some reason??

I've heard the opposite... that CR has fewer GI side-effects. I never had a problem with either in this regard. Sex side-effects were slightly less on CR, but not enough to matter. Have you ever tried Lexapro?

Less SE's with CR

I have tried both, and definitely have less side effects with the controlled released version. Having said that I'm still having trouble getting the dose up without running into a few...

But it was worse with regular Paxil.

Good luck.

What dose are you taking of the CR? I'm just thinking about adding 12.5mg to my 300mg Wellbutrin XL. Paxil gets a bad wrap but I can say I "felt" really good on 20mg of regular Paxil, better than any other SSRI I've tried. The only reason I quit was because of the sexual se's and slowed thinking. When I quit I had no problems either. I'm hoping I can get some benefits from a small dose added to the Wellbutrin.

I could go up to 25mg of Paxil CR without any deal-breaking sex side-effects. At 37.5 it was a problem, though. I found both Paxil and Paxil CR to be quite effective for depression and anxiety. I found Lexapro more potent at low doses than Paxil, but I definitely noticed something at 12.5mg.

Good Luck,
Jon :)

Are withdrawals any easier with the CR version???

As I understand it, they should be the same. In my experience, neither was a huge problem.

I've been taking 12.5 and just started adding another half tablet--biting another 12.5 in half, literally. It's been a little uncomfortable, but nothing intolerable so far. I'm going to try to stick with it. Hope you can too.

Are you taking anything else along with the 12.5 CR?
