Any ADs or anxiety meds which dont boost SA, NE

Posted by loolot on November 23, 2003, at 22:53:11

Are there any depression/anxiety meds which dont noost seratonin or norepinephrine? Maybe some which may work in a completely different way?
I know about dopamine agonists, but that is all I can think of

There are specific receptor blockers like, Remeron, and there are also the opiates.

As well there is a drug call Riluzole, (sp) which is a glutamate antagonist used for ALS, it purportedly has strong AD effects.

Those are the only 3 that I am aware of for antidepressants. But keep in mind that the mechanisms of how antidepressants work are not known. For example, scientists think that SSRI's affect serotonin, but they don't know if or how the serotonin effect relieves depression.

I thought Remeron boosted serotonin? Can you explain how it works?

The 3 are serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. But there are many different types of serotonin.

There are different types of serotonin receptor, but only one type of serotonin.
