Has anyone heard of this drug????

Demulin 150.. it is a newer form of birth conrtol with high levels of estrogen. I have to take it because topamax effects birth control pills. I have tried searches with minimal results. Anyone here on topamax and birth control pills?? Anyone?? Karen

Hi Karen,

I was on Topamax 50mg and birth control (ortho Tricyclen lo) for a month and a half. You should look into this more because both are hormonal medicines and you could get side effects like extra hair growth, acne, etc. If you have a dermatologist, ask them about these interactions. Both medicines are known to cause breakthrough bleeding(the pill)and irregular cycles(topamax) and in my experience both happened.

Honestly, I would drop the Topamax or any other med that interacts with birth control simply because they both have effects on periods. If there was something else you could take instead of Topamax that could be an option and you don't have to worry about menstrual side effects, cosmetic effects and birth control effectiveness in general.

But I love Topamax!! I have tried Lithium, depakote, lamictal all without good results and topamax has seriously chagned my life... changing to another is not an option.. i have taken ortho tri cyclen and depo provera in the past (without topamax) and didn't have any side effects. I was told that you really couldn't take anything but topamax and demulin together because the topamax would render "regular" birth control less effective. hmmmm... maybe I should check more into it... but are there other side effects I should expect with the demulin compared to ortho or depo provera? that's my basic question.. thanks.. karen>

Hi,

If you tolerated Depakote and Lamictal without any dermatological side effects then you'll probably be ok. Namely because hair growth, acne and oily skin are a result of androgen hypersensitivity in women(which not all women are sensitive to) and all anti-epileptics have an androgenic component. I was just really sensitive to Topamax and also I was tapering off lithium after 7 years and changing thyroid function could have been responsible for it to. Talk to your dr.

I generally tolerate all drugs well, with limited side effects. I tend to be lucky that way. Thanks so much for your help. I appreciate it. Now, I'm not so stressed out aobut going to the "female" doctor once again this year. Thanks again! Karen

Please let me know how this goes as I am in the same situation with the Topamax and the Birth Control situation. I may end up having to drop the Topamax because my female problems are somewhat complex. I had to try several different types of BCP's before finding one that stopped the pain I was experiencing. I'm still interested in how you're experience turns out though. Good luck!
