St John's wort and Wellbutrin

Posted by sisyphus on November 3, 2003, at 7:17:12

Dear all,

I heard that St John's wort is acting like MAOI med. And I found that Wellbutrin (bupropion) is contradicting to MAOI. Then is it safe to take them together?

Thanks

Hi,

I'm sure others will have better advice than me. I'm on Wellbutrin, and the prescription drug book I have says *not* to take both St. John's Wort and WB. Why? I have no clue....and have no personal experience with mixing the two....

Thanks a lot.

In Hong Kong, I can only buy Zyban here. The note only says that bupropion cannot be taken with MAOI. I think that your drug book is referring to it. However, I found that whether St John's is a kinda MAOI is still controversial. Many believe that it is not.

Thanks.

I'd say this is a no-no. I serotonin syndrome for SJW alone. Dopaminergic meds can (although not directly serotogenic) can actual enhance the possiblility of geting serotonin syndrome.

Ie the same reason you can get SS from Wellbutrin and an MAOI.

Take Care

At *almost* undetectable levels. The original report of the MAO activity failed to disclose that the doses used were 300 times the therapeutic dose.

It would be no different than using Wellbutrin with an SSRI. Caution is warranted. Dose should be very carefully and gradually increased.
