effexor, synthroid, glucophage, and now strattera!

Posted by cupcake on October 31, 2003, at 20:54:29

anyone else taking a similarly weird salad of medications?

this is my first time posting here, mostly cuz i have specific questions abt strattera. i have chronic depression and have been on effexor xr for over a year--it's been working well for me although i am now up to 300mg/day. (which seems high to me.) i am also hypothyroid, so i'm taking synthroid for that, and recently went to an endocrinologist because i thought i might need an increase in my synthroid dosage or something. i'd been feeling increasing hypothyroid-y -- lethargic, tired, slow thinking, difficulty concentrating, major weight gain, thinning hair, etc. anyway, he gave me glucophage to start b/c he said there could be a link with my OTHER hormonal problems and my weight gain. he said insulin/blood sugar moderating meds are sometimes prescribed for that b/c insulin levels are linked to hormone levels.

so finally, my psych just had me try a low dosage of strattera for my continued inattentiveness and difficulty concentrating...i started it yesterday.

today i've had bad mood swings, been weepy, depressed--more so than in a long time. has anyone else had experience taking any of these combinations of meds?

Could Strattera be making me anxious depressed?

Posted by cupcake on November 1, 2003, at 7:03:28

i'm new here and posted last night...i guess i'm being impatient but i'm just anxious to hear some feedback on this. i take 300mg/day of effexor xr for anxiety and depression, and it's been working well for me for over a year.

my psych. doctor gave me some samples of strattera to try for my ADD-ish symptoms (inability to focus/concentrate, distractability--although i've never been diagnosed with ADD--i tried, though!). i have been taking the "taper up" starter dosages for the last two days.

yesterday i was very moody and depressed, crying a lot last night, and woke up sort of anxious this morning. i also feel like this sometimes during PMS (despite the effexor), so it might be due to PMS, but i thought it was weird that i just started feeling like this since taking the strattera.

has anyone had any similar experiences? help...i have a lot of work to do (i'm starting a business and trying to finish my masters') and an anxiety/depression attack right now would really mess things up. :(

thanks in advance for any help or advice.

I am on 450 mg of wellbutrin, 25mc of cytomel, and 20 mg of straterra (to help with the wellbutrin poop-out). I recently came off of effexor because I had the same symptoms as you do. I couldnt stay awake and I gained a lot of weight, plus I had no sex drive.
I started cytomel for slight hypothyroid which helped give me some energy. Im surprised your endo gave you synthroid (t4) because it had proven not to work as well as cytomel (t3). You may want to switch to cytomel.
Strattera is only a norepinephrine uptake inhibitor, so it could make you edgy and maybe a little depressed. I havent decided whether to stick with it myself, but I would say if your mood worsens you may want to switch to something else.
Apparently it takes a few weeks to kick in, though.
Interesting about the insulin thing. I havent heard that before.
