Increased my depakote

Posted by Dinah on October 26, 2003, at 9:59:55

This is the first week of doing it. Doubled it from 125 to 250 mg. The only changes I can see is that I am sleeping better and I'm unexpectedly tearful. I have this very very vague memory that the reason I stuck to the low dose was that higher doses made me feel depressed. Does that sound right? I could be completely off on that. It's been a while.

Depakote definitely makes me more depressed. This has been reported by others here over the years. I don't know what you are being treated for, but 250mg is too low a dosage on which to pass any judgments. Without a magic 8-ball, it would be difficult to determine if your perceived worsening of depression will be transient. The brain can sometimes act unpredictably when exposed to medication.

Hope you feel better.

Well,Dinah, what I remember I was taking 1000mg??
maybe more?
It was a depressing time made me worse also made me irritable angry...cried a lot...felt worse on it than any med I've taken.
Others find it calming, beneficial...hope it works for you.

I guess it's way too early to tell. But when I woke up this morning feeling teary (in that fake medication or hormone induced way) my first thought was "Ah yes, this is why I decreased the Depakote." But now I can't pin down the memory. It might just have not beneficial, or made me groggy or something.

I need to keep a chart in my Cabinet Of Failed Medication Trials to keep company with the little bottles of unused pills. The spectacular failures are easy to remember; the minor failures less easy. A chart would help keep it clearer.

Maybe my psychiatrists has notes on why I reduced the doseage.

Dinah,
My pdoc always keeps notes on the various side-effects I've had on meds- I would certainly ask yours why you decreased your depakote last time. I'm with Scott on this- depakote is VERY depressing, but I'm talking about 1500mg/day, and at your sub-therapeutic dose I know I wouldn't have any side-effects. But we can all agree that some of us are extremely sensitive to even low doses of meds, and my money would be on depakote if there are no other factors to account for your symptoms of depression. Why was the dose increased? Are you cycling more?
Take care, judy

Suggestion of my brand spankin' new migraine neurologist (who I like very much, although I wish she would stop saying "Hey, come look. You have to see this!" to the medical student.). The other alternative is lamictal.

My psychiatrist says I'm exquisitely sensitive to medication, which I think is his nice way of saying I'm a hypochondriac. :) So he prescribes everything in small doses.

P.S. She only wants to take me up to 500 mg. If it really works for the migraines, it might be a worthwhile tradeoff even if it makes me a bit teary and depressed.

What about Neurontin or a tricyclic for the migraine?

And one that's difficult to get an appointment with.

I'm still posing as a nice cooperative patient who won't cause her any problems. :)
