Worked Once, opposite effect

Posted by John1022 on October 3, 2003, at 18:23:45

Can anyone explain or has anyone heard of why a SNRI such as Effexor worked wonders for me in the past and now is having an opposite effect?

Is it possible that something has been damaged or has changed in my brain that won't allow me to react positively to Effexor?

Effexor (and Elavil) have both recently caused me the same serious side effects of feeling 100X's worse and depleted, when Effexor once worked in the past for me?

I am at a loss right now and am very worried that all of these anti-depressants will have the same horrible effect on me of feeling much worse than to begin with.

Thanks

This has been reported quite a bit & a good reason not to go off meds.

I wouldn't necessarily get to pessimistic too soon. I would recomend trying different antidepressants.

Another thing to consider is that often a primary depression responds quickly to a AD.

The first time I took Celexa, the depression was better within 3 weeks. The second time I took it it took months to get the same effect.

AD's upregulate neurogenesis, sometimes it takes continual and persistant exposure to them so that the growth factors can make the connections which make the depression better.

It is not the chemicals that solve the problems it is the chemicals that boost the growth factors that help you to see the solutions to your problems.

Thanks for the suggestions. I would give them more of a chance to work but honestly I cannot bare how they are making me feel (100x's worse than the actual depression).

It just really feels like it is having the wrong, opposite effect of what they are supposed to do.

I was off of everything for a week and felt almost fine (but wanted to try amitriptyline for tinnitus) and all of a sudden I could feel the meds start to kick in and make it worse.

I am pretty sure it is the meds because I take them at night, feel terrible the next afternoon when they are still peaking in my system and feel a little better at night as that previous night's dose starts to wear off.

They are seriously doing some crazy stuff to me (increased tinnitus, hypersensitive hearing, major anxiety, major feelings of being completely depleted of something)

Effexor, St. John's Wort and Amitriptyline have all made me almost none functional during the time when I am on them when all I am trying to fix is my sleep not triggering and this ringing in my head. I don't feel majorly down when I am on them, just feel off.

The same off feeling as I had years ago that was fixed by Effexor immediately, now it is having an opposite affect that seems to magnify tremendolously the depression like feeling I am having.

Thanks for the advice

"I don't feel majorly down when I am on them, just feel off."

I meant to say I don't feel majorly down or non-functional when I am OFF them, I just feel a little off
