To cybercafe and cubbybear:

Are you saying you had 0 % side effects and 100% good ones? I was recently diagnosed with atypical depression and switching to MAOI is now an option (after so so success with newer meds). I was thinking of going for Manerix (moclobemide) because it seems less prone to cause side effects and there is no diet assle. However, I haven't find many posts on this site where someone said it save their live. If it did, the effects slowly vanished with time. Have you been on Parnate for a while? Are you really saying that this drug changed and saved your life + + + ?
Thanks for your help

in the beginning i had orthostatic hypotension, meaning if i stood up too quick i felt a little light headed.... no big deal.. and it went away after a couple weeks anyways... at which point YES 0% bad side effects and 100% good ones

>depression and switching to MAOI is now an option (after so so success with newer meds). I was

parnate is actually my docs favourite AD... he will perscribe it after failing one SSRI/Effexor

>thinking of going for Manerix (moclobemide) because it seems less prone to cause side effects and there is no diet assle. However, I haven't find

the diet is no big deal and manerix isn't known to be particularly effective....

what you might want to try is a combination, like SSRI + stimulant, SSRI + wellbutrin etc

right now i'm on SSRI + stimulant

>many posts on this site where someone said it save their live. If it did, the effects slowly vanished with time. Have you been on Parnate for a while?

i was on it for maybe 6 or 7 months... it was great.... my mood was finally normal... but i realized i had ADD and had to quit so i could take a stimulant to treat my ADD

>Are you really saying that this drug changed and saved your life + + + ?
> Thanks for your help

of course... it's probably the number one treatment for treatment resistant depression
(esp atypical/vegetative type)

I tried Moclobemide and it produced no side effects but possibly made my depression worse. It is used far less often than the SSRIs or other ADs. As far as Parnate is concerned, there certainly are side effects (particularly at the beginning) and they are hypotension (low blood pressure), increased appetite and weight gain (most people experience weight loss, however), dry mouth, and reduced need for sleep or insomnia in some people. And most of these side effects disappear in time as your body gets used to it. Overall, it has been a lifesaver because it knocked out my depression and anxiety.

Hey,

I've been on Parnate for a month now. It is *by far* the best thing I have ever tried. It is thoroughly kicking my atypical depression's butt (though I reckon I still have a long ways to go). Unfortunately, it's not helping with my social anxiety, except for in an indirect way since I actually have my energy and wits back. As for ADD, I wouldn't know personally, but my mind is *definitely* more stimulated, clear, and focused. I don't have ADD, though, so it may be a different beast altogether.

As for side effects, it's much different than an SSRI. No sexual SEs (except for increased libido!), no apathy, no fog-brain, no muscle tension and anxiety (which I found by far the most intolerable aspect of Zoloft). Parnate does seem to be a unique, tricky drug, though. The initial period of getting used to it (a week or two) was a little rough- basically more sedation and muscle weakness than I was expecting. Once I was used to it I began experiencing bad insomnia, but to tell the truth, it's a much nicer change from the physical/mental/spiritual exhaustion of the depression. Being awake late at night's not so bad if you find something more interesting to do than toss and turn in bed. Only other SE has been some kind of wacky things with my blood pressure. I get these spikes now and then of bad HYPOtension, where I feel I'm going to pass out unless I lie down. I bought a BP monitor to keep an eye on the situation, as somebody else on this board told me he started getting spontaneous hypertensive episodes. I find this to be the most unsettling aspect of the drug by far. Not to scare you; I haven't had any reactions yet, and I've tried a few things on the list in moderation (still probably not a good idea, though).

Well that's everything I have to say about Parnate for now. All in all: I can THINK, I have energy, and I feel GOOD for the first time in ages. Just gotta stay careful and respect the stuff...

Hope this helps some :)

i think right now you are probably experiencing the effects of the stimulant metabolites.......... for your brain to really get used to the effects of the MAOI it will probably take about 3 months.... and there is a good chance you will experience some relief from your anxiety.... be patient :)

did the parnate did nothing for your ADD ? it seems to have some stimulant properties and a molecolar structure very similar to anphetamine ... didn'it help at all ? how are going on with your Prozac + stim combo ? (normal libido ?) last but not least, which stim are you taking ? sorry for the questionnaire ;-)

> did the parnate did nothing for your ADD ? it

i dunno it probably helped it a bit ... but my ADD is really bad. like i know people who can work without any meds -- i could *never* do that... like i would fall asleep at work if i tried

ummm... i actually think parnate worked ok for ADD for like the first month, and then the stimulant effect started to wane

also my dose was low (30 mg) so maybe a higher dose would treat your ADD? ... read the archives, see what other people think (i remember reading one dude who tried many stims and parnate and said parnate is more peripheral stimulation than central and he didn't like it)

>seems to have some stimulant properties and a molecolar structure very similar to anphetamine ... didn'it help at all ? how are going on with your

it definately helped... i mean just by relieving my depression it increased my concentration ... but i still did the clock watching at work that i don't seem to do on ritalin

>Prozac + stim combo ? (normal libido ?) last but

i'm taking celexa + ritalin, and i think the celexa is bad for me... typical SSRI apathy, no libido, sleep 12 hours a day, not too motivated, no positive thoughts about the future ......
i think dopamine = pleasure right now, serotonin=positive thoughts about doing other things
i seem to have the dopamine ok, life ain't bad, i enjoy things, but i'm lacking the serotonin-positivity

i imagine this can be fixed with switching to another SSRI?

>not least, which stim are you taking ? sorry for the questionnaire ;-)

methylphenidate/ritalin
dude it makes my day when i can help out a bro in duress .. i am happy to answer any questions i can

I have been on MAO (Nardil) for 18 years for anxiety attacks and it has been nothing but positive. Normal life and relatively no side effects after the first couple of months.

if this drug increases all three mood effectors in the brain, does not cause sedation, and increases the libido, WHY is it not the universal drug of choice?

diet restrictions, possible drug interactions

most depression sufferers only need a mild mood lift and only for a short time (50% respond to placebo these days! can you believe that?)

ok keep in mind that new docs aren't taught about MAOIs and are told that SSRIs have no sexual side effects or taht they're rare.... so why use MAOIs?

Parnate is definitely worth trying. The food restrictions are less extensive than most pdocs and even smith-glaxo provides (lots of documentation is available on this) and the side effect profile is relatively benign compared to other maois and the ssri group.
