Nardil and Bread

Posted by linkadge on September 26, 2003, at 7:00:09

I might be taking Nardil.

On some of the MAOI diets listed,
bread is restricted. Is this true
or is it just specialty breads.

Can I use store bought sandwich
bread whole wheat ?

Trust me when I say this...the ONLY "food to be avoided" is AGED MEAT and specific AGED CHEESE (the cheese that you would eat everyday--on pizza, etc, IS FINE)

ALCOHOL is fine in moderation, but TAP BEER should generally be avoided

I went over 3 years on Nardil, then Parnate.... I NEVER CHANGED MY DIET...in fact at certain points while taking NARDIL, I used a multi AMINO ACID supplement (which included DLPA, l-tyrosine, and L-tryptophan) and I STILL never had a problem. I used PSEUDOEPHEDRINE, and various nasal sprays at times, too.

The MAOI diet (at least to the majority of MAOI users) is silly (for lack of a better word) It was created because a minoriy of MAOI users may experience an increase in blood pressure (from transient to "crisis") when exposed to tyramine (or other pressor amines)...so therefore, it was thought, at the time, every food/drink containing a pressor amine should be avoided...this was back in the early 60's

Now the list includes items to avoid, items to eat in moderation, and items that are considered "safe" now

I never had any hypertension whatsoever....I did have what I thought was hypomania for a week when I combined fish oil with Parnate....I felt highly motivated, gregarious... but it passed (oh well)....for what it's worth, I'm not on any meds now.

If the fear of a hypertensive episode, or changing your diet is keeping you from what could be a potentially life changing medication, then I would have to argue the necessity of medication in the first place....based on my experience alone, I went through every med and combo, and before Nardil, I would have given my limbs to feel "normal" for just one day. On the other hand, depression, like everything else, is subjective.

I know..I apologize for the tone of my past post's in this thread. Sometimes I get a little passionate when it comes to MAOIs...anyway, I certainly do wish you good luck..

try a web search for recent food list...If I find one, I'll post it here.

I've never seen a MAOI food list that showed bread as a food to avoid, and I have many lists. You must have read one of the very old ones?

I take 60 mg Nardil daily, and eat various breads several times a day as well.
