Psychotic Med Afternoon Fade out? Dr Bob?

Posted by Daniel J. on September 24, 2003, at 7:41:31

My 15 yr old son just got back from a crisis center where he was "stabilized". In the center there are no outside activities and not much opportunity to excercise. At 6 pm he went out to shoot hoops in the driveway and I joined him at 7. By 8:00 he was ready to come in but I noticed some psychotic symptoms were surfacing. After he came in he was OK for a few minutes, then he got testy and went to his room. After a while he was talking to himself and getting a pen to write notes to someone?. This is what happens when he gets psychotic. At 9:20 he was willing to take his 20mg zyprexa and his artane. After an hour His light went out which means he is asleep. His afternoon/evening routine always includes excercise which is good but it seems to wear the meds off faster leaving a few hour psychotic "GAP" where trouble can occur. Is there a solution?
His current schedule Morning=50 mg Zoloft + artane
noon=artane 9 PM=20mg Zyprexa + 5mg artane

I did notice that when excercising he waits an hour before he drinks water. All his episodes seem to have been related to excercise or mild dehydration.

I don't know about effects of dehydration or exercise on drug levels. But I'm wondering if he should take one or both 9 pm drugs at an earlier time.
