Hi! I have been reading the posts here for a while now and I am experiencing what I believe to be is clinical depression. A recent visit to a therapist here confirmed that and he followed it up with touch therapy, but I quit going to see him when he told me my shoes were "pretty."
What has been anyone's experience with finding help in diagnosing and treating their problem? I am concerned that this beginning to ruin to my professional and personal life and the morbid thoughts that accompany my bouts are scaring me badly.
Thanks a lot!

If your therapist made you feel uncomfortable, then you were right to leave. Most therapists, however, are professional.
Maybe you can get a referral to a new therapist. You could ask your regular doctor, or specialist that you see, or ask a friend who you know who is a therapist or works with therapists, or ask a friend (although their therapist might not take you because they are your friend - but their therapist might recommend another therapist for you). Given your last experience, I wouldn't recommend just looking in the phone book.
You say that this is impacting your personal and professional lives, and that you have morbid thoughts. These things indicate to me that it would be good to get some help. You don't need to continue living this way.
Let us know how it goes. In particular, if you are having a hard time finding a therapist, please shout back - I'm sure someone on this board can help.
Good Luck

I'll admit that it is very scary. Although depression seems easy to diagnose, there are many other things that it could be. You may want to start with a family doctor to ensure there isn't a medical reason first.

Are you male or female?
My therapist is a female and she compliments me all the time on my hair and clothing. One of my problems is low self-esteem. It may be a common practice for therapists to try and raise their patients confidence level. Then again, it is extremely important for you to be comfortable with your therapist. Try a new therapist. By the way, what is touch therapy?

i dont' think i've heard of touch therapy-- interesting. i think the whole concept of "touch therapy" is more suspicious than just telling you your shoes were pretty though. (that was a half-joke). No offense-- i dunno.
Shoot, i said all that & now i dont have any advice. Sorry. Dont know your situation well enough. Good luck to you though.
