I have been taking Remeron (30 mg) for a couple of months. Lately I have noticed that my ankles/feet are swollen. I am wondering if this is a common side effect. I spoke with a Dr. and he recommended that I go for a blood test to check my kidney function which I have booked to do. The kidney function is a trigger for me because I only have one kidney due to cancer and now I have a tumor on the remaining one. I am hoping that the swelling is due to the remeron. Another problem that popped up 2 days ago is that I have a sore spot on the bottom of my heal that makes it painful to walk. Could this be another reaction? Other than these two problems I am hopeful about remeron because I am now interested in my hobbies again (it has been a couple of years) and I am not as tired during the day as I was on serzone. Has anyone out there had any of these side effects?

I have not heard of these side effects with Remeron. Maybe someone else has?

Edema is a side effect of Remeron, it's listed on the insert that comes with the RX. I only get edema on days when I work a 12 hr shift, I have started drinking coffee on those days and have found it actually helps with the swelling!! Go figure! ps: glad it's working for you *S*

Not sure you want to hear this, but yes, I had these exact same side effects on Remeron and I had to go off of it. I couldn't stand it. I thought the heel pain were heel spurs, but they weren't. I swelled up like a balloon on Remeron~and my joints ached like something else~just not the med for me but I wish you the best. Maybe you can ask your doc for Dyazide~a potassium-sparing diueretic to help with the edema-which is what it sounds like what you are experiencing~just a guess.
Take care:-)

This is my 8th week on Remeron and I have gained about 17lbs so far. I started out with 15mg the first week, 30mg for the next 2 weeks and then 45mg since. I don't really mind the weight gain so far because I was grossly underweight before. I am more active and do not seclude myself like I had before I started Remeron. I have noticed that my feet are a little puffy, but figured that was part of the weight I gained. I have noticed that my feet get sore and swell easily.

Thanks for the response so far. The puffiness has gone down a bit as well as the amount of pain in my foot. I hope to hear from a few more people on this subject.

After being on Remeron for awhile, I suddenly got the VERY puffy ankles ONE night...but it quickly went away and I stayed on the Remeron...haven't had the reaction again since that one time.

It was very bad for me...I had to discontinue the drug and the weight gain for me wasn't too pleasant either. Too bad as I liked the effects of the drug.

I was on Remeron for 5 weeks this summer. Started at 30mg, upped to 45mg due to sedation/dizziness/irritablity/edema side effects. Then dropped down to 7.5mg for just sleep. At ALL these dosages I had edema in ankles, knees, and fingers and abdomen bloating. I had continual pain in my ankles and finger joints particularly, as well as stiffness, but my knees were also uncomfortable. (I think most Remeron weight gain that people report is actually due to extreme fluid retention). Whilst adjusting these dosages, I would stop the Remeron for a day and immediately the swelling went away and pain reduced. I've been off Remeron for 3 weeks and have ZERO swelling and joint pain now.
A point of interest though, is that when on the 45mg, I was relatively free of that side effect until about day 6 on that dose, when it came back with a vengeance!!! So some people may be able to experience less edema at that dose level (or higher still). I realized the other day, that I was even having trouble gripping a cup or something with my hands, they just didn't seem to work properly and felt bruised, but now it's all GONE! I attribute those side effects to the Histamine 1 effect and the Renin-Angiotensin-Aldosterone axis being interfered with, dunno what others here think.
Remeron is a great sleeping pill, dunno how it is as an AD, seemed to do nothing for me, but I had bad experiences with it. I even tried the caffeine thing..no help, nor did drinking gallons of water!
Hope that helps you.

> Hope that helps you.I've been off Remeron for about a month or so and have resumed taking Effexor. I'm still having some oedema problems and my ankles are still stiff and sore (but it's definitely not as bad as when I was on the Remeron.) Effexor isn't supposed to cause this side effect (at least it didn't before.) Has anyone ever had lingering ankle pain/swelling after discontinuing Remeron? Have you been taking any other medications at the same time? This is driving me a bit nuts!

Yes, I can imagine it is driving you nuts! I hated it too. No, I was not any other medication whilst taking the Remeron, so it was clearly the culprit. And whilst the swelling went down right way, the pain and stiffness(esp. in ankles) did remain, but slowly reduced over a week or two. After 3 weeks, gone. I'm doubtful that Effexor would be causing the problem. I think it's just taking a while to get out of your system.
BTW, I work-out a lot, and that may have helped dissipate the swelling more quickly and reduce the stiffness too. - That was one of the reasons y I hated Remeron so much, I couldn't really work-out on it. Maybe try some gentle exercise? Check with your doc for other causes too.
Good luck!

I SWITCHED MY 9 YR OLD SON FROM CLONIDINE FOR SLEEP TO REMERON WITHIN THIS PAST YEAR. HE WAS DIAGNOSED WITH ADHD AND USES ADDERALL XR DURING THE DAY. THE SWITCH FROM CLONIDINE TO REMERON WAS DUE TO HIS UNWILLINGNESS TO DO ANY OUT OF THE HOME ACTIVITIES WITH THE FAMILY. THE DR THOUGHT IT SOUNDED AS THOUGH HE MAY HAVE SOME MILD DEPRESSION. IT HAS NOW GOTTEN TO THE POINT THAT HE WILL NOT EVEN ANSWER QUESTIONS WE ASK HIM. HE FIGHTS EVERY ACTIVITY WE PLAN AND IS VERY UNWILLING TO WORK WITH MY HUSBAND AND I TO HELP HIM UNDERSTAND HIS PROBLEM. HE IS IN 3RD GRADE AND IS A MODEL STUDENT. HIS GRADES ARE AS HIGH AS ONE CAN GET, THE TEACHERS COMMENTS ARE ABOVE AND BEYOND WHAT YOU WOULD EXPECT WITH WHAT WE DEAL WITH AT HOME, HE IS ADVANCED IN MATH, READING, AND HAS A GREAT INTREST IN SCIENCE. HE, EXCEPT FOR 2 WEEKS OF THIS SCHOOL YEAR HAS MADE THE "ALL STAR TEAM" FOR THE WEEK. THIS IS A LIST OF WORK HABITS, BEHAVIOR ISSUES, AND OTHER SCHOOL RELATED ACTIVITIES. MY QUESTION IS - SHOULD A 9 YEAR OLD USE THIS DRUG? WHEN I THINK BACK THE CHANGES IN HIS NEGATIVE ATTITUDE AT HOME INCREASED SOON AFTER STARTING REMERON. I CAN'T FIND INFO THAT DISCUSSES WHAT AGE GROUP THIS DRUG IS APPROPRIATE FOR. ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED!
