Is this board smart or what?

Posted by AndyD on July 18, 2003, at 8:40:54

Hey all,

This is totally off subject, but I visit alot of message boards. I often research my cars, my health, etc. Honestly, the people on this board, to include myself have problems, obviously, but we sure as hell aint dumb. Would I trade my intelligence for my anxiety/agoraphobia? Not a chance. At least I know whats going on. They say ignorance is bliss-maybe so. But I just want to improve on what I am. Just something that maybe will motivate those in need. Best of all its not hollow talk-its the truth. Dont believe me...just go to another message board. Just pick a subject. The literacy rate will shock you.

Ya'll have a great day.

Smart is relative. Given that the experts do not know the biological causes for mental illness,
all this "smart" talk is often for naught.
We have theories, but no model exists that describes (and works) for mental illness.

Actually the post was meant in jest and was only brought about because we do have theories and question others. Perhaps we should add that not only are we "thinkers" but also slightly retentive, for lack of a better word, in an effort to be civil.

I'm with you. I have NO patience for the juvenile crap in most chatrooms. Can't say exactly why this place is different, maybe the degree of desperation that cuts through most of the usual bull. Also I like to think that a lot of us crazy people are gifted with the kind of intellect and talent that could change the world if we could just focus all that scattered energy...

I think we can credit Dr. Bob with keeping the board civil and interesting. BTW, shouldn't this discussion be in Psycho-Social-Babble?

I agree that this is a high-quality board. I feel that people are honest. And that they strive to understand how meds work on it.

I don't want less articulate people to feel that they can't be on this board, but it does seem to draw those who write well and analyze problems.

Maybe Dr. Bob will want to consider that when he uses us for examples of "e-therapy." Maybe we are different than your classic 'online support group.' Or MAYBE -- everyone thinks _their_ board is the best.

I've been visiting this board for about 2 months now and I was just telling my husband a few days ago how impressed I am with this board...a lot of smart, supportive people that share knowledgeable information.

Keep up the good work!

i have a lot of ... very successful, popular friends in real life but!
i just don't respect them the same way that i respect people who 1) have endured so much
AND 2) have insights into life that is way beyond what any normal person can comprehend....

mental illness certainly seems like a curse sometimes .. and don't get me wrong i would rather be without it..... BUT putting down people who have experienced so much has always seemed strange to me (even before suffering bp) i would have thought you would look up to someone with wisdom + willpower/inner strength

i dunno... in many ways i feel closer to people in cyberspace than some of my best friends ...... i wish i could find more functional bipolars to hang out with :)

I know that I am not 'stupid' and in most areas of my life I can certainly hold my own.

I have to admit though, that all this knowledge presented of chemical, neurotransmitors (sp), HTP receptors, ect. is way beyond my scope, as it is researched and presented here. It astounds me.

Therfore, I am one person who 'cheats' and reaps the benefits of receiving knowledge and personal experiences from others. It is way beyond, in my case, much better info than I receive from my pdoc. He is very receptive to it and agrees that I should come here to Psycho Babble. He says he can give clinical information from books, but no one knows the experience of mental illness and responses to meds, as do those who suffer with it and we work together.

I do not post often, unless I can offer my own experience but will be posting today to ask for your help and input.

I'm biased, of course, but I agree. :-)
