I have been on Topomax for 3 weeks. I'm a 30-year old female and I'm ramping up my doses to 100. I'm currently at 75 mg and next week will finally start on the 100 mg dose. I have noticed major bladder incontinence over the past week and a half and severe back pain between my shoulder blades and my lumbar area. I am wondering if these problems can be caused by the Topomax???
I have to add that I have had major depressive episodes for the past 2 years with no luck on any anti-depressants. Topomax lifted clouds off of me that I didn't know were there. I am 3 weeks into tx with Topomax and I'm still having some depressive episodes. Another question I have is how long does it take for those to stop? I don't want to die. My doctor suspects I am Bi-Polar which is why he started the Topomax. Please help.

Hi Tanya--
Yes, Topomax can cause these side effects (according to the drug literature). PLEASE call your doc ASAP to report these problems. If you do have to discontinue this med, there are others of its class which may work just as well--for example, Lamictal.
Good luck---medlib

I agree with medlib - don't stop taking the medication on your own but do get to the doctor right away. Not to alarm you but it doesn't hurt to be careful - the "back pain" you're experiencing might be your kidneys, since you're also having bladder problems. It might be nothing,
but let your doctor decide.

It is indeed one of the side effects of Topomax, but there is a way to prevent it - drink as much water as possible. That is what I did for the short I time I was on it.
Of course if you are already having back-pain your doctor should know. :-)
