Risk of EPS with 2yrs+ 2.5mg Zyprexa???

Posted by ace on June 23, 2003, at 21:38:47

I know it is impossible to answer this question empirically- but theoretically, 2 yrs on 2.5mg- what do you deem the risk for EPS?

Just wondering..
Ace.

Hey dude,
Has that been continuous or have you had breaks? Did you ever worry about EPS? Man, I want to start Zyprexa real bad, but I'm obsessing abot the possible s/effects- give me so advice! I know it will clear up the OCD big time.

Cheers,

Ace.

I've been on Zyprexa for 2 years now... up to 15 mg at one point, but have settled down at 5mg.. I've never had ANY problems from it (oh, except the night I tried to OD on 80mg.. I was up for 2 days twitching then).. I took a 2 month break from it last year, and quite quickly the suicidal ideation came rushing back, so went back on it..

My only problem with it is th weight gain.. but its better than planning my death the whole time..

I took 20 mg Zyprexa for about 3 years and 4 months without problem, then switched to 30 mg Abilify (to counteract weight gain) and haven't had any problem with it either.

I have read that Zyprexa and Serzone are similar in some ways. I looked them up on the drug chart, but I am not sure if they are similar in the ways that count. Just a thought, because I am starting back up on Serzone, but I will be having monthly liver checks. I took it in the past and my liver tests back then were fine too. My concern about Zyprexa is the possible connection to diabetes, but I havent researched it too much. I share your concern for meds. I worry whenever I take anything, because I am very med sensitive. Good luck with everything!

Prity much continuous, I took one or two short breaks for a month or less. I love the stuff, nothing better.

I don't think the Zyprexa causes diabites or high cholesterol, just from the medicine itself. I think its the over eating and weight gain. When I lost the 50lbs my cholesterol went right back to normal.

i think the only thing you need to worry about is irreversible EPS ... i had EPS when i took 5 mg, but it went away after about 3 weeks...

what is really bad is if you get irreversible eps which won't go away even after you stop taking the drug... i think this is rare at 2.5 mg .. and the only cases i've heard of are from people who started to feel numbness and continued to take the medication (also higher doses or APs with higher risks of EPS)

i'd say go for it dude.. zyprexa is great when it comes to incidence of EPS / TD

Thanks Cybersafe!,
I aggree with you man. 2.5mg is very low and EPS is so rare. Like I've heard of folk on 10mg for like 3 years. 10mg for 3 years is equivalant to 2.5 mg for 12 years- and they had no probs nor should I.

I'm going to do it I think- I'd rather have no OCD and have the tiny risk. Also, I've heard of people on low-doses of Haldol for 15 years- no EPS. You just want to keep your dose low, if poss. Even EPS usually fades with time, and the EPS isn't actually very much in most cases.

How long have you been on it? Working great I assume?

Take Care mate,

Ace.

i've been on it for about a year ... and it works really well for bipolar ... unlike valporate, it doesn't make me sleepy all day, doesn't give me tremors, and actually makes my moods stable....
oh yeah, doesn't require a blood test either :)

for me it's a wonder drug

Does it do anything for the atypical depression that comes with Bipolar II. Hypomanic periods (if I have any) are not a problem - haven't been able to shake the atypical depression for 3 years. Lamictal 350, Prozac 15, and Klonopin 1.5 keeps me alive but not much more. I have tried the other combos.

paxil worked for me twice ... then i went to effexor, and it didn't work ... then to parnate and it *did* work (but stopped cuz of ADD)... then to celexa + ritalin and it works but i do attribute quite a bit of the AD effect to ritalin

zyprexa alone definately does not get rid of my depression .... but it helps
