Is that your personal observation, or is it a question for philispohical debate? I would call it a science based upon clinical trial and observation, but still clearly in the realm of medicine. They are still called "medical arts" are they not? However, as medicine must be prescribed to achieve the desired chemical changes in brain chemistry, how can it not be a prescription? If your point is that GPs are NOT the best docs to be delving out psychoactive drugs, I totally agree with you. It took my Pdoc about 4 months to come up with the right meds for me. Few GPs would have that much time, patience or experience, as most of what they learn is from literature or a posteriori or emperical experience.

Psychopharmacology SHOULD be an art and a science, and perhaps it is on rare occasions. Most of the time, however, it is "shooting in the dark" and "hit or miss." There isn't any other speciality in medicine or science that could get away with this.

LOL. This reminds me of what Andrew Solomon said in "Noonday Demon"* about it being like a game of darts!
*actually, I read it in the excerpt of the book that appeared in "The New Yorker" magazine. I have yet to still read the actual book! BTW, the New Yorker link takes you to their cartoon collection, not to the magazine itself, but what the heck, eh? Maybe someone would enjoy the cartoons and PB will benefit from it!

This is kind of a philosophical question, so I'd like follow-ups to be redirected to Psycho-Social-Babble, thanks.
