I'm new to this board. I had been taking Prozac at 40mg for several years with good results until about 2 months ago when I started experiencing break through depression and anxiety. My doctor switched me to EffexorXR and I have worked my way up to 200 mg a day. I've been at this level for two weeks now. I tolerate the EffexorXR well and I do notice an improvement in the anxiety. However, I am still struggling with the depression. I want to ask him to add back Prozac or another antidepressant. Any information on what drugs to use with EffexorXR when it helps but does not give 100% relief???? Thanks in advance for any help anyone might be able to provide. Jan

Talk to your doc about increasing your dose. I've been on 225mg for over 6 mos and due to life circumstances had a recurrence. I switched from my family doc to a psydoc. She increased my dose to 300mg and also added Buspar generic at a low dose to try and help the bruxism (jaw clenching).

I would be very leery of adding another a-d to a *strong* one like EffexorXR is known to be.
However, the recommendation about increasing the dose (watch your blood pressure though!) is a good one because at different doses, EffexorXR hits different receptors and eventually if you go high enough - I think it is either 225 or 300, it hits all of the *big 3* (serotonin, norepinephrine, dopamine).

Thanks to all. Actually, I checked more closely and I AM taking 225 mg. a day of EffexorXR (one 150mg plus one 75 mg) but I've only been on that dosage a little over a week. I'll give it more time and then ask about going to 300 mg. My doc also wants me to see a mental health professional for advice before I go on another anti-depressant with EffexorXR.
This is the end of the thread.
