Why aren't more people on fish oil? Since starting fish oil I have noticed that I have a lot less intrusive thoughts, derealization and paranoid thoughts. My sleeping pattern is way better too. I just feel a heck of a lot more normal.

fish oil has helped me a lot too. It also helps my heart rythym abnormalities

Yes I have OCD. I had it quite severe when I was a teenager. I was affraid to touch knives for fear that I would go crazy and kill someone. Another problem I had later on later on when I started driving I would backtrack my route to see if I had ran anyone over. Then go back around the block again to see if I ran anyone over the second time around. What a living hell! I was affraid to look into cemeterys because if I did someone I loved would die. I never had the handwashing problem luckily.

How much fish oil do you guys take? I'm in a study for Lamictal right now for bipolar II depression, but I've considered taking fish oil when I'm done (not in a study). It's cheap and very available, so why not? Is there a "therapeutic level?"

I'd go with Carlson's fish oil. I'd go with 3 grams a day. Take care.

Thanks for your input! Carlson carries several variations (which is what has me in such a tizzy before ordering). I'll list them here. Which one of these do you suggest?
1) Salmon Oil and GLA
2) Super DHA
3) Salmon Oil
4) Super Omega-3 Fish Oils
5) Finest Fish Oil Liquid Omega 3 (apparently this one comes in a bottle vs. gelcaps)Thanks again!

Lee, I personally use #5 (Finest Fish Oil Liquid Omega 3). Yes, it is in liquid form in a bottle (not gelcaps). I like it simply because I get sick of gulping down so many gel caps. It's very easy to just mix the liquid in a small glass of orange juice (or whatever) and take it. One tsp. gives you 1.3 grams of EPA/DHA, so it's just easier than taking a handful of capsules. It may be more expensive. It doesn't matter if you choose the lesser priced gel caps but choose the fish oil over the salmon capsules (so choice #4 would be fine too). If you want to save money, www.iherb.com sells a liquid fish oil that is much cheaper, yet still good quality (it just tastes worse to me...but you could still mix it with juice and gulp it down, lol). One more thing. You may want to gradually work up to the 3 grams a day of EPA/DHA. You could take about 1 gram/day for the 1st week, then perhaps 2 grams/day for the 2nd week, then 3 grams/day for the 3rd week and on. Some people need a little time to get used to the fish oil.

Sorry to keep you waiting so long for a response. I buy from a company called Iherb. I take Ultra omega 3 molecularly distilled fish oil - liquid 8oz. bottle. It only costs $7.00 a bottle and gets cheaper when you buy 2 or more. I take 1-2 tablespoons a day. I also take some Omega brite 1-2 capsules a day.

I take about 2 tablespoons per day of Carlson's lemon flavored liquid fish oil. The one with the label "the very finest fish oil omega 3".
That gives me around 4+ g of EPA per day.
When I first started taking fish oil, it took about a week to notice a difference. Same when I increased from about 1 g EPA to 3 to 4 g EPA.

Thanks for this information! It sounds like it's much easier to get the required amount from the liquid preparation!
I'm also curious about fish oil because it has a lot of Vitamin A (?) and Vitamin A is supposedly what helps with acne.
Thanks again - Carlson's really seems to be "the name" in fish oil and magnesium.

Only the fish *liver* oil has all that vitamin A. The fish oil I take has no vitamin A. And I think there are a lot of other fish oils that don't have vitamin A. Just stay away from the liver oils, like Cod Liver oil.

I reread your message. I guess if you want vitamin A then Cod liver oil might be good. But be careful of too much vitamin A.

for psych uses stay away from upsetting the critical ratio epa/dha by adding other omega 3's
