I can feel a bout of depression looming, and wondered if anyone has any ideas how to head it off before it really gets a hold on me?
I've tried a few ADs with unspectacular success, and am generally very resistant to trying meds. Of course, my pdoc is on vacation for the next two weeks, too...
Thanks for any advice

Just my humble opinion but I would get some fish oil, chromium picolinate, B-12 and Sam-E and start taking all of it now. If you still feel bad in two weeks, see your pdoc.

Depression is aprogressive process, and one
depressive epsidode brings on another. And another, but worse, ect. Seek medical treatment
to stop this process or iw will continue to be progressivly worse. The choice is yours.

Hi, what AD's have you tried? For how long? What is your diagnosis?
Hoping to help,
Kristen:-)

Thanks for your replies.
I've tried Paxil and Celexa -- probably a couple of months each. Paxil didn't help and made me feel very foggy, and Celexa was good then suddenly started making me uncontrollably sleepy during the day -- I'd fall very deeply asleep around lunchtime.
Tried a dose of Nortriptyline recently and it made my heart race so much I was scared to take any more of it.
I've very afraid of meds and how they'll make me feel. I have young children at home, and obviously need to feel "with it" to look after them well and safely. Paradoxically, they are the ones who motivate me to get out of bed and do something every day, and they are the joy of my life.
I have anxiety as well as depression, and get panic attacks from time to time. The anxiety does play a big part in my reluctance to take meds -- I know I shd be treating this, yet I'm scared of feeling different and also of the side effects.
It's like a constant battle between my rational side and the fearful, emotional one.
I do intend to try the fish oil and will pick that up tomorrow.
Thanks for your concern and suggestions

Well, as everyone seems to agree, get some exercise, too. Aerobic for sure!
Find an inspirational book that will motivate your mind and spirit.
I happen to think talk therapy is a good foundation to keep one more resiliant, so one can gain better control over moods.

Don't treat it and you will be depressed for the rest of your life. How does it feel to be depressed, to you ?

I feel tired and lethargic. I am dragging myself around, and probably wouldn't bother if not for my children.
I don't want to talk to my friends or go anywhere, and feel like getting back into bed and pulling the covers over my head.
When I'm on the border of depression I can fake cheeriness and get through my day "normally," but when I'm overcome with depression I don't even have the energy or resources to do that.
Last night I forced myself to meet some friends and they immediately asked me what was wrong -- and I'd been trying to put on a good face.
I know that I've crossed over into a real depression the last couple of days, and want to battle it and not get sucked into its spiral.

Med do hold to possibility of feeling normal and also if you do not like them, you can stop them.
I think that Fish oil, exercise, ect are great seconday treatments but are not effective as primary treatments for serious, long term depressions.I have young children at home, and obviously need to feel "with it"
How do your kids feel about mom being depressed ?
