Stopping Abilify

Posted by laurarn on March 9, 2003, at 8:55:42

I've decided to stop Abilify. I usually stay on a med for at leat 2-3 months, but this just can't be done with this med. I do realize that this med is a lifesaver for some and I in no way mean to negate that. Many people have found great success with this med. We all just have to search for the right one.

The restlessness (akathesia) and agitation I feel on this med is incredible. I plan to call my pdoc today to let him know I am stopping this, but I am not taking my dose today. i've tried it for 2 weeks. I know there are meds to help with the akathesia, but I'd rather just return to taking Seroquel.

I can't concentrate, I can't sit still and I am very irritated throughout my day. Well, I just needed to get that off my mind. I haven't slept well for a few days Too bad the half life is so long.

Thanks for listening.

Hi Laura
Read your post and I am sorry that Abilify did not work for you. My daughter has been on it now for 2 months and we do see some slight improvement. However she too also experiences exactly what you had stated and irritation and that.

What I though of doing is having her psdoc perhaps add a low dose of risperdal along with the Abilify. She was on risperdal at first. It did nothing for her schizo symptons but she didn't have the irritation and restlessness like she is having now.

Meds work differently for each individual and maybe the abilify just isn't the med for you. I do wish you the best. Take care.

Thanks so much for replying. I guess I am not ready to entirely give up as there are options I need to discuss with my pdoc. Maybe the dose is too low. Maybe I should think about adjunct meds.

For today though, there is no way I am taking my dose. I'll take my Seroquel this PM and sleep like a baby.

I've been following your posts regarding your daughter. I commend you for finding her the help she needs. You sound like a very caring parent. I've been hoping that you find the right combination for her. Bless you for trying.

Thanks again.
