anyone smoke more on ssri's?

Posted by babs on February 18, 2003, at 21:01:04

I have always been a smoker but I noticed that when I started celexa my smoking increased (lately it's gotten out of hand). I'm just wondering if anyone lese has experienced this. Is there a chemical basis for it? My theory is that ssri's make my add worse so I smoke more and consume copious amounts of caffeine.

this happens to me on zoloft, along with inability to sleep more that 4 hours, etc. basically i get hypomanic and chain smoke (or used to)

i think it's related to dopamine release or depletion by ssri's. nicotine helps fight the drug-induced apathy, which is better than depression, but not better than well.

are you bipolar at all?

creaky.

Dear Creaky- No, I'm unipolar with GAD, OCD and ADD (how's that for a mix!). I used to smoke when I was on imipramine but NEVER like this. I went from 1/2 pack a day to a full pack a day on celexa. Now I'm up to a pack and a half a day since my mom was diagnosed with cancer (you would think it would have made me quit but nooooo... not me! I just smoke more).

You may be able to counteract this situation by taking omega-3 fish oil.See www.omega3.20megsfree.com for details

I have been taking fish oil for about two months- haven't noticed a difference yet, but I can still hope. At any rate it has definitely improved my mood and that is a very very good thing!

actually I smoke less...the day after I started Prozac again I woke up feeling that I just didn't want one, and from that day smoked half of what I did before...since then I've also implemented Wellbutrin and cut it in half once again...

Good Luck!!

The dose of fish oil that helps people to reduce smoking may be higher than the amount required for depression.I could not safely recommend you though to increase your dose of fish oil if you are well now in case it upset your present status but you could yourself consider increasing the dose very slowly to 10g daily, stopping if you have side effects or have a relapse of your depression.
