I have just dropped Celexa and started lithium.
I understand the anger I feel is a responce to
decreased serotonin, but the lithium only has a limited effect. Should I wait things out or,
is depakote better for anger??Linkadge

I've been reading for a while your differents trials with meds. Don't give up! You asked about Lithium or Valproate for the treatment of anger. Both are good and both are useless. Your anger is probably a symptom of depression since you got off SSRI. Of course i'm not your doctor and take it with a grain of salt, but i would bet my house this is a full return of your depression. And for most, Lithium or Valproate do almost nothing for depression. You might add another anticonvulsant like Lamictal (which is wonderful for depression) if you don't want to fire up an hypomania.
Good luck!
Max.

I was told I had bipolar disorder about a year and a half ago. I was out on an AD, and Depakote, which caused bad side effects. I then tried Lithium, same bad side effects. Even when I was taking them, I had problems with anger/aggitation. I would have temper tantrums/anger outbursts. My pdoc wrote me a prescription for Klonopin. It did help the anger I was experiencing. I was having my outbursts mostly in the evening, so I took a dose of Klonopin (clonazepam) around 4 pm everyday.
I am now diagnosed with ADD, so I am taking meds for that. I still take Klonopin 2 mg a day for management of anger, seizures, & anxiety.
Have you ever considered or tried a benzo for the anger?
Good Luck
Jodie

Benzos really do their best stuff for anxiety or seizure type situations, and the new theory is that pathological anxiety is a "slow seizure" like they think bipolar is. But why are you angry? Irritable mania? Or treated like garbage? Anger is a symptom of something.
I have nasty irritable mania ( and was treated like garbage most of my life) and I like Trileptal best of all the AEDs/ mood stabilizers.Few side effects, minimal if any weight gain. I also go to therapy, which helps enormously. Coming off an SSRI will make you feel awful too- the withdrawal effects are worse than the company PR lets on, and then you always fall into a gap between drugs too,
You need to pick a mood stabilizer, and give it time to work. it can take a few weeks to titrate up to the right dose, and a few more to realy settle in to it. Then see if you need an AD- you may not. Different benzos work for different people, I can't use Klonopin but you should try it- A benzo will help sooth the storm in your brain. If it doesn't work, there are plenty of others to try. I use Valium. The great thing about Benzos is that they work now, you may be groggy or giggly for a week but they work pretty immediatly.Hope it gets better soon
