Subclinical Hypothyroidism / T3 for depression?

Posted by wingedcat on February 7, 2003, at 15:13:55

I'm 22 and female, and I have a family history of hypothyroidism. My psychologist said that my depression, anxiety, and attention problems could be from my thyroid beginning to fail. I got it tested, my T3 and T4 are on the low end of normal and my TSH is on the high end of normal.

I take low-dose Deprenyl and DLPA and it has helped in that I'm no longer suicidal and I am more alert. My anxiety is still bad, though.

I see my primary doctor on Tuesday and I'm very nervous. They have sent me away before (after charging me money) with "We don't treat depression here." I'm afraid they're not going to help me. I can't stand being referred all over the place and given the run around again.

Do any of you have experiences with thyroid hormones? Have you tried using Cytomel (T3) or Thyrolar (T4+T3)? My mom's anxiety completely disappeared after she added T3 to the T4 she was taking for hypothyroidism. Thank you for any responses.

I think if it runs in the Family I would try Cytomel. Im going to pick up mine today, so Ill give you the rundown after Ive taken it for a week.
I have "legitamate" endocrine Illness
The Endocrinologist started me off at 10 MCGS a day
Some people do great on just ONE 5 mcg per day, it sounds whimpy but T-3 can cause some to OVERDOSE on tiny ammounts,
Im hoping it will augment my Abilify and, LESSEN my paranoid feelings, which are acting up today. Cytomel 5 mcgs cost .50 cents per pill
Good luck
Synthyroid hasnt HELPED at all for any symptoms. its not very helpful,, (thats just me)

Synthroid didn't help my mom either, her TSH went down but she didn't feel GOOD until she added Cytomel to it. Thanks for replying and for offering to share experiences.
I hate paranoid feelings, I'm hoping it will help me with that too.

Wingedcat -- (great screen name, BTW)

I (also subclinical) take 45 mcg T3 twice per day and have for over 2 yrs. Couldn't live without it. Made me feel over 100% better than where I was, but Lexapro made me feel over 100% better than that. As always, YMMV.

If you need it, take whatever makes you feel more like yourself. Isn't what this whole exercise is about -- trying to feel more like "yourself"?

Best of luck to you in navigating this most hideously misunderstood realm of psychomedicine (endocrine interactions) --
