Hello,I am new to this message board. I suffer from anxiety attacks, panic attacks, and depression. I have been on Effexor for almost three years. I started to have health problems for the last year or so. Sorry to be graphic, but rectal bleeding, vomiting blood, chest pains, pelvic pains, breathing problems (like asthma attacks), liver problems, and several other problems. Because I have a history of uterine cancer, my doctor was very concerned. They sent me to specialist after specialist, with every invasive test imaginable. No one could find any cause for my bleeding. I asked my doctor several times, if it could be the medication. Effexor was the only medication I was taking. I then developed ovarian cysts.
Long story condensed here, I was roaming the web and came across this site about Effexor XR Side Effects. Imagine my shock and fear. I printed out all the information, which is also found in the free sample packs that your doctor supplies, and took it to my doctor. He was shocked. I am now, under his supervision, cutting down on my dosages, and hope to be effexor free in two weeks.
I know medications work different for everyone, and my intention is not to scare anyone away from taking the Effexor. It really did help me manage my depression and attacks. The nasty side effects I mentioned that happened to me were very rare. Just my luck. <g>
But after this disaster, I have requested that I try going drug free to see if I can deal with my depression. I am really scared to try another medication after this. Does anyone have any suggestions or ideas?
Thanks for listening,
Bonnie

I know the feeling. I just had a very bad experience with Lamictal. Ended up in the Er this past Saturday night with a horrible, nasty rash and am considering stopping what I am on--Prozac and Wellabutrin.
It seems as if they really are not doing anything for me...still have lots of cycles.
I have an appt this Thursday with the pdoc and want to see if I can just try one med to see if I can get stable, if not, then I am looking into making my own vit/min/herbal formula.I am not sure what to do...I also wonder if anyone is dealing with this disease without meds?

Well, it sounds like you had the right judgment about this medicine. I was on the Effexor for about 7 weeks and my body wan't adjusting to it. I was then put on Prozac Weekly, it took a couple of weeks, I think around three, to kick in but there have been no side effects. I also take Neurotin to help me sleep at night. I hope that this helps!

Be *VERY VERY* careful of some of the garbage you read on the web. There are many websites where people have irresponsibly but up that taking Effexor/Paxil/etc causes this, this, this, this...etc. The ones that come across as the most *shocking* are usually full of bull.Yes, there are legitimate concerns with these meds, as there are any, but a few of the most common have been withdrawl, personality changes with fast dose increases, and weight gain.
Some of the meds with the most documented use are the older tricyclics. They have side effects also, but they have been used over decades of research. That doersn't mean they are any 'better' or 'worse' than newer meds, though.
Bottom line....be rational. These websites that list that new psych meds cause this, this, and this, don't have scientific research to back them up, and are often written by people with their own agenda (i.e. lawyers, or people looking for someone to blame, etc.)
I wish you best in healing your other ailments...and yes, your mental health can be treated well too.
Jay
