Zyprexa kick-in

Posted by Michael D on November 24, 2002, at 12:17:08

I started 2.5 mg of Zyprexa on Friday. It's starting to affect my mood, but not in a positive way.

I've read that Anti-psychotics take a few days to take affect. What have been the experiences of this group?

That's a really low dose of Zyprexa. I was on 25mg. Then again, I am a schizophrenic. I don't think you'll get as much effect on 2.5mg. But you shouldn't get side-effects either. I gained 30lbs on Zyprexa, and my friend's mom gained 30lbs in 4 weeks on it. Geodon is a newer antipsychotic that does not cause weight gain, maybe you should check it out!!! I'm on it right now and it works just as well.

I have never seen the positive effects of Zprexa. It made me like I was on Paxil, very jumpy and confused.

My experience is if they take effect, it takes some weeks to make any sign of change. But thats just my two cents.

That's exactly how I feel. (I've been on Paxil)

Did you take Zyprexa for a few weeks?

What did you try after you had tried Zyprexa?

I take 15 mg of Zyprexa for schizophrenia. I noticed a change in symptoms after about a week. It took a couple of months for me to feel the full effect, though. I gained 15 lbs. I also take Lexapro (for depression) and Topamax (for seizures).
2.5mg is a low dose so maybe you won't feel many side-effects.

What changes did you notice?

How does the effect of Zyprexa feel?

Overall, how do you feel now? Is the feeling 'natural' or do you feel drugged in some way?

you didn't mention why it was prescribed, personally I think too many pdocs are prescribing it for other than psychosis and just guessing by your low dose I suspect that's the case. I take 10mg/day when I have a manic episode- it is sedating for me and therefore calms my mood. It actually kicks in fairly quickly for me, certainly within a few days to a week. take care, judy

I take Zyprexa for agitation/extreme anxiety, 5-10 mg depending how i'm feeling. It calms me down. At first I felt dizzy and drugged but now I don't feel any side effects (it's been about a month). It worked for me within 3 days. I still feel depressed and a bit anxious though (i.e., it's no "wonder drug" for me).

Well, I forst given Zyprexa int he middle of a psychotic episode... 2.5mg and felt relief with in hours for that!!

It took a few weeks and a rise to 5mg before it had any AD effect on me, and I went as high as 10mg, but settled at 7.5mg and it was wonderful!! Its the only med that has ever really helped me.

But idiot new Pdoc doesn't believe in its use as an AD so took me off and I've beenb going steadily down hill ever since.

I didn't get any rea side effects.. I thought I might be feeling slightly sedated, but been off it 3 months now and still feel just as sedated!!!

Good luck

Nikki

What changes did I notice?
I noticed a decrease in paranoia and the voices. The other symptoms, intrusive thoughts and ideas of reference, took longer to subside.

How does the effect of Zyprexa feel?
For the first couple weeks I was very mellow. Now I just feel a little sedation during the day and a lot at night. I don't have problems with anxiety anymore. It's the strangest thing, but my mood is very, uh, "level". I don't know how else to explain it.

Overall how do I feel?
I feel as though I'm making a trade-off...symptoms of schizophrenia for medication side-effects. I'm much more functional on medication, despite all the side-effects. I definitely don't feel like my pre-schizophrenia, drug-free self, but this is better than being psychotic and not being able to function.
