Some studies say smokers have lower MAO-A and MAO-B activities caused by chemicals in the cigarette smoke.
Could any of you who tried or is sucessfully taking a MAOI for depression, suddenly quit or reduce smoking??
Im a smoker, very addicted and people say they have never seen someone like me who is such a cigarette junky. I really need it to "fuel my mind". If I dont smoke, depression dramatically worsens within a few hours.

I have not seen anybody on an MAOI give up smoking but then MAOIs are not used much nowadays.I have though seen some people give up smoking by taking omega-3 fish oil for a while.5-10g daily should help your depression too.Put omega-3 fish oil in the search box and read more about it.Why not try nicotine patches or gum?

Not an MAOI, but my mom (and me for that matter) were prescribed effexor before quitting smoking. It happened I was prescribed for OCD though. My mom also was on the patch and chewing nicotine gum. She has a prescription for Xanax too, but I don't know that she used it much. We doped her up good though. I know what you mean when you say cigarette junky. Cigarettes were going to kill my mother and fast if she didn't quit. It was horrible listening to her cough and wheeze. Anyway, she made it, it's been 5 years (me too, but I was nowhere near as badly addicted). She still chews the gum, but I, she, and our Dr. could care less. She's in wonderful health compared to before.

First, I am not searching for an aid to smoking cessation. Just want to find out, whats wrong with me.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=11233991&dopt=Abstract
----------
2-Naphthylamine, a compound found in cigarette smoke, decreases both monoamine oxidase A and B catalytic activity.
----------I also read, reuptake inhibitors like Prozac slow down the metabolism of serotonin from the first dose for some days, till some other regulating mechanisms come into play. So I thought Reuptke inhibitors reduce the metabolism of the transmitter they affect for a short time.
!Strangly, thats the time when I get the best effect from meds. Freed from the need to smoke, and depression goes back enourmously. after some time this changes.
It is known MAOIs can do this for the entire time they are taken. (slowing down the metabolism of NE, DA, ...)
Maybe an MAOI is the answear to _my_ problems.
Just want to know if there is someone, a depressed smoker, form whom a MAOI solved the problem (depression + smoking) and is the ultimate effective medication.
A MAOI is one of the few meds I havent tried yet.

I've wondered the same thing. When I get depressed all I want to do is smoke and smoke. Years ago when ADs worked for me, I didn't smoke (or want to smoke) half as much, now they just make me want to smoke even more.
If you do get to try MAOIs and they help you quit then let me know.

I quit smoking after I added low Provigil (50-75) to low Nardil for me (60mg) - I was a very light smoker for years prior to that, ie; a few ultra lights a day average. But at age 19-20 I was at maybe a pack of Merits a day - in pretreatment days.
I have very severe SP and 2ndary dysthymia - untreated that is.
It is accepted that smokers get parkinson's 5 times less often. also those with SP 5 times more likely to get parkinson's later in life (ie; my risk for parkinson's higher by factor of 5 than the average person.
Also caffeine - this drug I found that since I take this high dose - I noticed that it quells my desire to smoke - much like provigil. Only for me though caffiene had such effect at doses around 1.5 grams per day - too much to recommend to the average person.
Bromocriptine - in a study by Wirshing at UCLA - found it reduced smoking.
Nicotine, certain dopamine or similar type meds above (caffeine boosts DA and glutamate brain specific) - provigil, perhaps maoi's would augment (combinations possibly contraindicated) - this effect - oh and I forgot the classic welbbutrin known to reduce smoking craving - another DA drug.
See ya
