efexxor side effects and sucess

Posted by Troncin on October 26, 2002, at 0:27:41

I have recently been diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety disorder and Major Depression. I have been taking 100mg of Zoloft for seven months but it is not helping. My doctor is switching me over to efexxor xr so i was wondering if anyone has experienced side effects and if anyone has had sucess with it.

There are lots of things to consider, both while you're on Effexor and when you decide to stop taking it. I found much help in this forum- I would recommend that you pull up a chair and read the previous threads about Effexor and side effects. And good luck!

I took Effexor XR for three months. It worked well, after about a month, for depression. After that I began to have more and more anxiety. I also added Wellbutrin during that time which made things worse. Eventually I quit both, only to have many shocking sensations, fluctuating mood changes, and depression during a month of withdrawal. I was up to 225 mg and tapered to 75 mg before quiting. I'm still having slight shock sensations and some balance problems. The worst effect while on Effexor was anorgasmia and loss of libido, and eventually erectile dysfunction. I had been on other ADs prior to that which also had the same effects (Paxil and Celexa). Paxil worked the best for me for (3 mos.) depression/anxiety, but had bad withdrawal effects with Paxil also, similar to Effexor, including nightmares and sleeplessness but no shocks. You can't entirely get around withdrawal effects with drugs that increase seretonin since the brain has to adapt after quiting. Effexor can be great for many people though, one of the best, just watch out for the withdrawals.

I was on effexor for 2 months. I got through the initial side effects in about 3 weeks, but then started to have really bad heart racing problems and was out of breath alot. Because of my job, which if very physical, my doctor thought it best if stop. The withdrawal systems are real bad. Keep in touch with your doctor when you go off, because he/she might be able to give you something else also to help. I am now taking a prescription pain killer for migrains and it really helps so far. good luck

You will find lots of posts in this forum about side effects. This med has done a lot of people benefit - for them, any side effects went away after a while or were tolerable given the relief they experienced (myself included).

I think the majority of the people who post here have negative effects because if they have no problems, they don't go looking somewhere to post . . .

Give it a chance, if your doc thinks it will help.
