Effexor has done wonders for my GAD and occasional temper-tantrums. My fiance and I actually both started taking, both have seperate prescriptions and both have had excellent progress with the mood swings and worrying.
However, before the Effexor, we were both able to reach orgasm and both had much more of a sex drive. Now, she almost never gets to climax (she used to be multi-orgasmic) and is getting extremely frustrated. We both have follow up appointments with our psychiatrist this month and obviously we are going to say something about it. Is there any help, information or guidance that anyone can give us on another medication that is as effective as Effexor or tips to work around this issue?Thanks!

I am on my 4th week on Effexor XR, my wife in her first week. For me the ability to climax has been reduced but too early for my wife to say either way. I take my med at bed time and found that if we go to bed early and take the med after sex it is easier to climax than if you take it before going to bed as it seems to act very quickly (it's an active metabolite I think).
The only other AD med that avoids this problem I know of is Serzone - I took it for eight months or so last year and it had the opposite effect!! It actually warns you that erection is a side effect and it definately seemed to increase the pleasure. Unfortunately it did not work nearly as well for me as the Effexor has now in treating my anxiety and depression. Paxil was horrible - could almost never climax on that but controlled the depression very well, but despite that I eventually got depressed about the sex rather than what was happening at work to cause me taking it in the first place.
There is some good advice others have posted under the 'anyone have success on Effexor XR' thread on this site - it's been running since 1999 and might be worth going through if you haven't already. Good luck!

As a male, having been treated for 4 weeks on Effexor XR, I have absolutely no problem climaxing. It's almost a relief after being on Paxil for 3 months while being practically impedident (sp?). I still have a very lively libido on Effexor XR.For women, I don't know how many women out there can testify to this, but I've heard that Paxil (for anxiety disorders at least) has less side effects on your sex life. A friend of mine that has been taking it for years swears to this. However, her partner was also rendered basically impedident on Effexor XR.
*Shrugs* I think everybody's a little bit different when going on any anti-depressant. If it's a huge deal try switching the ADs up a little bit.
