If you use omega-3 fish oil and find it useful please tell us about it here.We know it works for some and not all so only those using it and getting a benefit from it should contribute here.It would help too if you state the brand you take, the amount you take daily, the cost per month, side effects, other meds you are on and for what condition.

I am slender and do not eat much by
nature. Since adding O3 to my diet
my depression, gets less awry. Ie
less suicidal idealation, etc.
I just feel less like life is too unbearable.
It does seem to smooth things out. I am not
manic but at times my mind races, it seems
to help with this.this is all just my opinion but
it is what I have found.

I thought I might mention that I take 1-2g daily of Eskimo-3 fish oil to reduce the stress of daily living and it also helps my sleep.I use it too for its effect on cholesterol, heart attacks and strokes as a preventative.

Hi, Ed. I tried to take Omega 3 capsules, but they made me terribly sick. (I don't have the brand, dose and other info with me now- will post that later- but it contained both EHA & DHA, in the form of fish oil concentrate.) I took 2 capsules with breakfast (this was the US rec. daily allowance) and felt bloated, sweaty and ill about 30 minutes afterward. I tried only taking 1 capsule with breakfast, but that also made me sick.
I have tried flax seed oil capsules, and I don't think it had the same sickening effect. Has anyone here read or heard of flax seed oil affecting reproductive health? The reason I ask is because my OBGYN is the Dr. who recommended fish oil specifically for depression. She said that she uses flax seed oil herself, but she suggested fish oil for me (I have forgotten the reason).
Thanks in advance for info/advice on how to get the medicine to go down. I don't think a spoon full of sugar will help with this one...

Fish oil is gross, but if you want to try again, I know you can get a kind that's enteric-coated so the pills don't dissolve until they reach your intestine. Haven't tried it myself. I tried the regular kind and threw it out after the first fish burp (yuck!)

I use the GNC brand of Salmon Oil. I went with the Salmon oil instead of the fish, because it was recomended to me. I take only one 1000 mg capsule in the AM, and don't notice much while taking it, BUT when i stopped for a week I went into a major depression. It might help to tell you I suffer from Bipolar 1 and OCD. I also take Neurontin, Klonapin, and Sam-e.

Also, there are brands that are "deodorized" to help avoid the infamous fish-burps. Eskimo3 is one of them--pricey though.

I may up my dose to 2000 mgs a day. It may help with my Sam-e headache. I just started the Sam-e two weeks ago, and so far it seems to be helping, but gives me a mild headache.

The dose required varies widely.I notice an article in this month`s issue of Archives of General Psychiatry where a small dose was of significant benefit to those taking other medication for depression.

What about flaxseed oil? It has Omega-3 too. Has anyone heard if it's as beneficial as fish oil? Or is the Omega-3 from animal sources more effective for some reason?

Flax-seed oil is high in linolenic acid which the body converts into EPA and DHA but only to a small extent.Better to go straight for the fish oil.

My diagnosis reaches from neurotic to endogenous depression and GAD. once diagnosed psychotic depression (but this is not true) and social phobia (also not true).
I take it to get a proper effect from medication. Its an essential part of my medication.
I take Eskimo-3 (2g/day) (during day, because I find it more activating)
and Omega-3 (from www.vitaminexpress.at) 6-10g per day (I juse this one mainly at evening for sleeping issue; its high EPA/DHA)The rest:
75mg Amitryptiline Extended Release (Saroten Retard)
150mg Effexor ER
Vitamin B1,B6,B12 at high dose
L-Tyrosine (from time to time)bye
