Dr. Bob doesn't get involved with the medical questions here, he monitors and administrates the board.
Can you say what meds you have tried or if you're in counseling. How long have you had these symtoms?
There are people here who can help you if you give us more details.
Thanks.

Phil,
I have major depression and ocd...Zoloft works VERY well for my depression and ocd...the problem that Zoloft doesn't help is anger/temper/irritability (I know when I'm losing it but I can't stop the anger/irrit)...now, here's the thing---a VERY small dose of Lithium (ONE pill EVERY 2 days or so) works fantastically! BUT, would something else work also (I know the anti-convulsants work too BUT those seem like very powerful drugs....I really think that there must be something 'milder' that would work..even though the anger/irrit. is anything but mild! Any thoughts?

are you on anything now? I can only tell you what i have found that worked for me, i'm not a dr or anything. you should see a psychiatrist and explain exactly how you feel, just like you did here. you did a good job here.
from what you said, your main problems seem to be anxiety culminating into panic attacks, irritability, a little impulsivity, and racing thoughts
from my experience these are key points you want to bring up to a dr.for my anxiety i have found that paxil helps a lot. to complement Paxil, I am also on risperdal and gabitril. the risperdal, just a little dose (.25 to 1 mg) helps slow my thoughts down and makes me think more clearly (less impulsiveness). the gabitril also helps with anxiety, and for me, helps with mood swings too. the irratibility you mentioned could mean you are a little hypomanic, maybe not. Does it come and go in cyles and how often? If so, you need something to help even out your mood. It may sound like a lot, but i have found that a little of this and a little of that works best. it takes time to get the tinkering right, so you have to be patient. paxil can take a few weeks, but risperdal and gabitril work much faster.
any questions? feel free to write back!

I wish I had thought of treating the anger at the time. If lithium works with not too many SE's maybe that's the answer.
Hopefully someone else will respond here cause I'm not sure what to do on this.
I know the anger comes up quick, right?

wow you find paxil helps more with anxiety than gabitril? ... i found paxil didn't do very much for me (something, but i definately required a benzo)
i'm curious to know why you chose risperdal over the other antipsychotics... i'm taking zyprexa myself ... i also have thoughts that could use slowing down.... i tend to think about doing 10 different things at once..
umm... to what extent do you find risperdal stabilizes your mood compared to gabitril? ... i know antipsychotics like zyprexa are supposed to be compared to lithium in terms of mood control

"I know the anger comes up quick, right?"
>>>>>>Yes, it can come very suddenly...sometimes I'll just feel irrit/agitated and angry all day.....I have tried Lamictal, VERY low doses, and it seems to work well also......
Anybody have an opinion on which is better---Depakote or Lamictal?
What are the pros and cons of Depakote?
Finally, for anger/temper---would something like Klonopin work??? Thanks!

I find that klonopin works relatively well for me for occasional intense anger flareups. But in my experience, it might not be the best choice for more frequent anger problems. Perhaps it's just me, but Klonopin doesn't work as well for anger as it does for anxiety.

Are you doing any counseling? Have you read about any meds on this board that you might think could help you? You going through some hard stuff and need talk support.
You've got to see a shrink and get the right meds.

paxil is my main drug for anxiety, but alone it wasn't enough. gabitril stopped the panic attakcs and helped me breath much easier. i can't compare paxil to gabitril, i don't know. i know the gabitril works overnight, and the paxil takes a few weeks, so it seems gabitril is better b/c it is easier to compare before to after, unlike paxil.
risperdal is the only antipsychotic i have tried. it is a favorite of my dr. i take it for OCD related thought races and circles. it helps keep my thoughts from getting tangled up. it helps me think through things before i act impulsively. i suppose it helped stabilize my mood just a little, but i was pretty hypomanic on the paxil, and from the zoloft before that. so i was put on gabitril at first just for mood stability. then my anxiety got a little out of control due to circumstances and so i uped the gabitril so it would work for anxiety. it has.
i am pretty stable where i am now. i have the freedom to take a liitle more risperdal from time to time if i think i need it.

What do you take for anger? anything?

Well, I don't get angry all that often, but I don't think I get angry any less on my dose of Klonopin (which admittedly isn't high). I'm only on Klonopin and a small dose of Depakote. I don't take anything specifically for anger.
But I have noticed that Klonopin doesn't work as well for the physiological arousal of anger as it does for the arousal of anxiety. I do use meditation or perhaps self hypnosis to deal with it sometimes. And my other methods of coping with it are highly dysfunctional, so I won't share them. :)
Perhaps a mood stabilizer would do more to prevent the anger. Sorry I can't be more help.

yes i will be seeing a shrink soon. in this town thought it takes forever. it is a small town with like no good shrinks. or so says my family doctors. but i soon will be going. my mom thinks that because i have been on pills for a week my depression is gone. she doesn`t think this is serious at all and it pisses me off. like she thinks i was faking this or something. i hate the things she does. even when i used to cut my self up she never thought it was serious

Cutting is a serious symptom of an underlying psychiatric disorder. Has anyone ever discussed a possible borderline personality disorder with you?

never. my doctor doesn`t even know about it. but i had a bad problem with it. over 200 scars on my arm. i only ever did it on one arm and on my chest. but vitamin e oil helped alot with the scarring. you cants even tell. i just did it when i was mad though. not all the time. i just liked the site of the skin cutting and it calmed me down. if i didn`t do it i felt i would explode. but it has been two years since i have besides once a coupla weeks ago. but i just find if i get pierced instead then i don`t get mad . weird eh?
but no one has ever discussed this with me. no one will. justg ignors it. but piercings are addictive . when i am not happy i always get one

I tried to just post about cutting but was cut off with a phone call then found your posting. I have to go and run errands but will be on the site later on. I just started cutting again. I also found high mg's of vitamin e helped with wounds. I would use.....I don't think I should go into detail on line but do understand your feelings very well.
Thank you for speaking up
