Valerian and Effexor

Posted by sid on January 28, 2002, at 16:04:02

I got a bit more info on that, following a discussion with my pharmacist.

Valerian interacts with Effexor in a way that increases the concentration of Effexor because it prevents it from being eliminated the way it should be, i.e., the way it is eliminated when one does not take valerian.

There is a number of other meds that valerian interacts with as well, but I am not sure yet about other ADs.

My pharmacist has prepared some papers for me to read that I will go get within a week. I will post more detailed info on the process by which valerian interacts with Effexor at that time. I'll post any info pertaining to interaction with other ADs too, if there is any.

Thanks Sid!

Sid,
Thanks for looking in to this! I was taking Valerian in the beginning with Effexor and it really helped. But now I'm so curious. Keep us posted.

>I also got some information about valerian from my pharmacist, quoting from an article on the "Natural Medicines Comprehensive Database: Monograph" - There is preliminary evidence that valerian can inhibit the cytochrome P450 (CYP450) 3A4 enzyme (6450). Theoretically, valerian might increase the levels of drugs metabolized by CYP450 3Aa4. However, so far this interaction has not been reported in humans. I was interested in taking valerian to counteract the myoclonus I get from taking 30 mg. remeron. Our herbal pharmacist advises no-one really knows of the safety - however it would be more safe if I took them 2 hours apart. Hope this may also help you!!
