symptoms of methadone detox???

Posted by alejandra on September 4, 2002, at 14:08:27

My boyfriend was in a car accident last october (he is a paraplegic since 1996- doing great, very active and healthy)but this last accident really put him back. For the pain, the doctor prescribed him methadone (ta ta ta taaaan!) and apparently he got addicted to them and has been for the past 3-4 months or maybe a little bit more.I did not find out of this until I came back from a one month trip overseas and noticed that he memory was scattered and his speech was different and he was not very "smart" (and he is very smart)- he was slow I guess that's what I mean. He was making stupid decisions and I was getting very stress and upset all the time. Then it came out in one of our arguements that he had been on methadone for that amount of time and that he felt he could not stop. He was taking 8 (10mg) per day (maybe more). I told him that he had a problem and that we had to find a way to stop. (I don't get how doctors prescribe so freely). What he did next was the worst- he dumped all the bills in his bottle and went cold turkey. I don't remmeber if he began feeling sick right away or what but he got sick and had to go to the doctor who became very upset with him for quitting so abruptly and proceeded to give him a shot of methadone. My boyfriend told me that he has been reducing the amount to 2 pills per day now and yestaerday he did not take any nor today. But I am not 100 % sure of that. right now he is sick- he vomited and has been breaking in cold sweats, he bit his tongue so hard the other day that he cannot eat with it. He is very weak and has a lot of nausea. Are this regular symptoms when you go off of methadone? What are other symptoms? I don't know what to do to help him. Any suggestions? I am mentally and physically tired from this and my other personal happenings-everything seems to be happening at the same time. I guess that't the way life goes some times.
If you read this, please address my questions. I really appreciate it. Peace, Alex

I was addicted to codine ( same drug family as methadone )for a lower back injury and was sick for 18 days trying to get off codine...I could not do it alone 4 times in one year ..I went to Homewood mental health centre in Guelph Ontario ...rated 4th best center in North America..they used a methadone taper to get me off the codine that lasted only one week ...Methadone I believe is like a neutralizer for hard opiate drugs ..heroine ,cocaine.codine opium...and so on ...I Think that you are really going to have to check with A good detox center like the one mentioned above to see how he can get off methadone easy ..I'm sure there is some type of sedative that could help ..BUT this is SERIOUS so talk to a detox center that specializes with drugs and alcohol abuse ..if not done right he could have a very serious siezsure and convulsions and I dont want to mention the other word but this is no slice of pie ..Get GOOD Advice..My payers are with the two of you

These are the symptoms that I had:

Feeling hot an cold at the same time,
Horrible sweats,
Dreadful goose bumps,
The runs,
Burning sensation on the skin,
Suicidal thoughts,
Insomnia,
Shivers,
Leaden fatigue,
Pupils the size of Texas,

Imagine getting sunburnt, putting linament all over your body, then standing naked in a puddle of water in 35 degree weather with the wind blowing and sweat pouring out of your body. Add the worst suicidal depression to that and you have the bacic idea.
