I recently started Parnate again and am only taking 10 mgs in the am and am cutting the next pill in half for the afternoon. I will be increasing it sloooooowly until I get to 50 mgs or so. However, my pulse has been really elevated, like up to 100, although I don't feel jittery or anything. I can't remember, is this usual and does it pass?
No, I don't currently have a doc, we just divorced! Seeking new one - yuck!

> No, I don't currently have a doc, we just divorced! Seeking new one - yuck!Yeah, I was wondering this myself. I tried Parnate for about 3 weeks, but only got up to 30 mgs. I usually tolerate meds really well, but my heart was just beating really hard and fast all the time. Not jittery though, actually felt fairly decent but no real dramatic improvement. Like if I laid down on my stomach I could feel my heart hitting against the bed..! Felt like it was going to blow out of my chest.. so, I told the doc this after 3 weeks and he told me to stop it. Never got to find out if it would wear off, so yeah, Im curious as to if anyone knows that as well. I wouldve liked to have gone higher and for a longer period, but then again I dont want to end up like that guy in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.. heh, later

Tell your pdoc about this- they need to know.
Be carefull- I loved Parnate but had to stop it 'cause of heart problems. It metabolises into various types of speed, including methamphetamine, and tachycardia is a listed side effect. (Thats the rapid pulse, in case you didn't know ;) ) I had this too, and it progressed into nasty arrythmia ( heart plays sambas instead of boring glug glugs) and I was turning gray and keeling over. My EKG looked like it was done by a kid with a Spirograph. Fortunately my medicine doc is better than my pdoc, so I'm here to tell you about this.
The moral of the story is that crank is really nasty stuff, just like the DEA says, and you should go up very slowly on the dose with this drug. If you feel like your heart is beating funny, don't be afraid to make noise about it. Keep monitering your pulse and be aware that a lot of people have had to discontinue the drug because of heart trouble. I went back to normal when I got off the Parnate but heart trouble is really scary stuff.
I hope it does work out for you, because Parnate was the best med I've ever taken in terms of my head. Can the rapid pulse thing slow down? I only know it didn't for me and you need to know about the possibility of cardiac effects. I wouldn't wish my experience on anybody.
I started titrating up on selegiline (very slowly!) a few weeks ago after the Parnate washed out and it's starting to give me that MAOI can do cheerfulness again. Nardil gave me five stable years during which I got a few degrees and had a lot of fun- how amazing! So there are plan b meds if Parnate side effects get out of hand.Miss Liz
If your sleep is screwed up, be careful there, too. Parnate can mess up your REM sleep and I think the physical exhaustion of no or bad sleep aggravated the whole heart thing. Not to mention the possibility of a mania.

Thank you Liz - very helpful! I found yesterday if I took a quarter of a .5 xanax it slowed down my heartbeat and I was good for the remainder of the day and the evening. Then it was bedtime - something I used to relish and am now scared of - because as you say sleep is elusive. I have awake periods wherein all I have to do is think - and as an anxious person that thinking is NEVER the good kind. I'm back this morning with a racing heart and and an half of xanax under my tongue awaiting a call from my former psych. from '95! Do you use it for depression or for panic disorder?

Did you find the Nardil also interfered with your sleep? Let me know how you do on the Selegilene, I'm very interested. It seems that most of this community is dealing with depression and other mood disorders rather than panic/agoraphobia. Do you use it for depression?
Thanks again.
