Hi All,
What is the highest dosage anyone as heard that someone has been on with Lamictal, either for bipolar/depression or epilepsy/seizures?
I'm up to 400 mg and have no appreciable side effects but the anti-depressant effect (the most consistent I have ever had) has worn off to a large extent.

hey Peter- I'm on 450 with no side effects as far as I know. The depression is much better...been a long time since I could say that I have more good days than bad. Scares me tho, that it "wore off" with you. Do you mean that this happened each time as you increased it or was it after a few/many months of feeling good?
Your highest dose can also depend on what else you're taking. I'm also taking Tegretol and may have to go a little higher than what's typical...I didn't start to feel better until I hit 350 and even then it was minimal...

Hi Kar,
I'm glad it's working for you! I was depression free consistently for a couple of weeks but then had relapses which disapeared after I increased my dosage. I'm going to try to add Neurontin and see what that does and also maybe Tegretol. I found a very inspiring article about a woman who had years of depression with multiple trials of meds and finally a combination of Lamictal, Neurontin and carbamazepine worked.

I think its effects as a seizure inhibitor weaken over time, also. At least it sure seems like the petite mals are coming back, and the garnd mals too.

My pdoc told me that for some people using it as a mood stabilizer, Lamictal doesn't kick in until around 600mg., and some of his patients need to go higher for good effect. He told me the amount that some epileptics go up to- I don't remember the exact figure- but it was at least 1200mg.
I take 300mg, works well for me, and I also take Neurontin which balances it well. I take a very small amount of Depakote (250mg), and Depakote somehow potentiates Lamictal, so my 300mg is probably the same as a higher dose of Lamictal for someone else who is not taking any Depakote.
The trick for me with Lamictal was increasing by small amounts (12.5mg) very slowly (every 2 wks.). This kept away side effects and allowed me to figure out what the right dosage was- for me.
