From Celexa to? Effexor or Moclobomide

Posted by XaosSurfer on May 7, 2002, at 19:47:42

I have been taking 60mg of Celexa for about 4 months. The Celexa has lifted my serious depression quite nicely. However, Celexa has agrivated by ADD symptoms a lot AND I am tired and apathetic and unmotivated most of the time. I feel like 2 steps forward and 1 step backward. Nice but not good enough.

I am seeing my pdoc later this week. I have whittled my choices down to Effexor or Moclobomide. The problem with Effexor is that it might cause the same side effects. The problem with Moclobomide is the Celexa wean, wash-out and ramp up could take 2 months.

Any suggestions? What would you prefer? Why?

Thanks for your support,
Paul

I would definitely go for the moclobemide. There's atleast one study that shows efficacy for ADD. Anyhow, the only real side-effect I had was headache which went away with time. It didn't give me that apathy blah no motivation thing that the SSRIs seem to. It's not very potent and may require a high dose, though. Check with your doctor, but I don't believe you would have to wait more than 2 weeks off the celexa -- not that that's much better than 2 months :) If it doesn't work, though, you can start effexor or some other drug 2 days after stopping the moclobemide.

Good luck,
Jon

I don't know anything about moclobemide, but if sedation, apathy, and the blahs are problems already, my experience with Effexor (yikes! don't everyone attack me!) was that it made me not want to get off the couch for the month I was on it. I had absolutely no motivation at all...

just IMHO...

best of luck,
Wendy

Maybe you could add Adderal to the Celexa. I'm not so sure that stopping Celexa would be a good idea due to the fact that it has worked well for your depression.

Lexapro is the new version of Celexa which should be available in the US next month. It is just as effective as Celexa but with less side effects. For example, it causes less drowsiness.

Thanks for everyones suggestions. I do also take Dexdedrine. Living in Canada means I cannot get Adderall or Lexapro. However, I can get Manerix.

Another idea that came up in my research is adding Zyprexa to the Celexa/Dexedrine combo. The Zyprexa might combat the apathy. Any thoughts?

Thanks,
Paul
