I am curious about whether or not smoking cannabis while taking 30mg of buspar (15mg twice daily) is safe? Has anyone done this and if so what are the effects?

Derek--Have you been taking the 30 mgs Buspar for some time? Or are you just starting out?
On the cannabis the questions are similar.....are you a 'regular' smoker or an occassional recreational one?
No one here can tell you whether or not it is safe. But some may share their experiences.
All drugs behave differently in everyone. Buspar and marijuana are no different.
I'll share more later......lack of sleep has me getting very low.
Namaste.

alii-
Thanks for such a prompt reply. I have been taking the buspar for about a week and three days now. I am a recreational smoker, in fact, I probably only smoke about ten times a year. -derek

Derek,
I had a response typed out here but after having to reboot three times (my system needs to be wiped and reinstalled from scratch---my o.s. is soooooo unstable) I can't gather my wits to do it again.
Tomorrow I'll add more.

You should get used to the Buspar for a while before smoking. To see what it will do without 'help'.
Let's see; I have a friend, sorta, that has smoked pot with a lot of different combos with no ..................................uh....................PROBLEMS, YES!!!
Of course, he won't know if he could have gotten better, sooner without it..doubtful.I worry a LOT about people drinking on meds. I know a lot of people on meds that just get smashed. That's not good.
my 2 bits,
Phil

Phil-
Off the main subject **BUT**, what exactly is your concern about drinking as it pertains to antidepressants?
I drink about a glass (or two) of wine with dinner almost every night. I'm on Zoloft and Wellbutrin.
Thanks!

hey dereck. like the prievious post said, i dont think anyone can say whether or not this is safe, however, pot generally doesnt cause any problems in combination with ads or other meds. (at least serious ones. maybe problems with reduced effectiveness or the like) but, play it safe. even when im not taking any meds i actually prefer a few tokes compared to a few grams, since i dont handle pot very well, and this level makes me more thoughtful and philosophical (yet less motivated, outgoing and concentrated). pot is notorious for causing the prievious, and ive read that pot reduces dopamine transmission, although others may disagree. however, i wonder if theres a link. i smoke once every week or two, sometimes more, sometimes less. high school is high times for alot of people, but ive cut back a great deal for several reasons, but nothing to do with med interactions.

i almost forgot, yes i have smoked while taking several meds(though they didnt do anything anyway) and i never noticed anything bad. i dont mean to be intruding, but i know buspar is for anxiety. dont you find pot makes you more anxious? i sure do. but everybodys different, actually i know some relax on it.
p.s. i just thought of something. i know from experience with friends that they find anxiety relief with pot when they feel that over jittery, over stimulated kind of anxiety which i have never experienced. also, back in the day when i experemented with hallucinogins, friends liked to smoke pot to reduce anxiety (it just made me more spaced out). the over stimed anxiety and hallucinogin anxiety may be caused by too much dopamine, and maybe pot does its job here by reducing dopamine, as i had heard before. any thoughts?

Buspar eventually has a depressant effect on the brain. If you look up drug interactions for Dronabinol (Marinol) the THC pill you'll see that it interacts with depressant drugs. Smoking will just increase the depressant effect. So Buspar could cause pot to sedate you more or make you more vulnerable to the downer effects you can get from marijuana. Pot is a depressant drug. Take Xanax, Klonopin, or Valium and then smoke and you'll find that the high is very different (even if you take the aforementioned anti-anxiety drugs regularly and at the therapeutic dose). It can make the high less "paranoid" and more chill. However, marijuana always has after effects even for the casual user. It can mess up your memory, enery, motivation, and definitely make you more anxious. This can last for several days to weeks after smoking. The memory can take even longer to recover. I stopped smoking due to the adverse effects from pot, and have no desire to start back up. It's not really worth it. I think it would be safe to smoke while on Buspar, but I'd advise quitting it altogether. Not even occasional use. But hey, I can't tell you what to do. Just think about it and what it's really done for you and if it's worth it. You seem concerned for your safety/health to some extent. And it's definitely not healthy. I used to smoke everyday. Then I'd smoke casually. I know I was a different person then when I look back on it. I'm glad I don't smoke anymore and think that eventually the user has to decide for themselves if it's worth it.
This is the end of the thread.
