Question about Zoloft and the other OCD SSRI's?

Posted by rainbowlight on April 9, 2002, at 2:19:23

I am bipolar and I currently take Lamictal, Remeron and a small dose of Risperdal. My doctor just added Zoloft 3 days ago for OCD/anxiety. The side effects are tolerable. I have noticed though that when I try an anti-OCD SSRI (Paxil, luvox, etc.) that to have it strong enough to get rid of the anxiety/OCD that it then makes me feel like I am in a fog, that it is hard to concentrate, and don't have much in the way of range of emotions. Is this typical? Do these side effects go away in time? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Were you taking Remeron or Risperdal on the last run of SSRIs (Paxil, Luvox)? There are "widgets" in these medicines (Remeron and Risperdal) that may help alleviate the emotional blunting felt from an SSRI.

Yes, I was taking Lamictal (100 mgs), Remeron (30 mgs.) and Risperdal (12.5 mgs.) while I tried Luvox, and then again while I tried Paxil. Both Paxil and Luvox made me very sedated and in a daze, also not much emotion. I am now on my 4th(?) day of 25 mg. Zoloft. It is helping quite a bit with the anxiety and OCD. But the short term memory loss and lack of emotion are there, not too bad though. Should this pass as I get adjusted to it? What is the standard dose of Zoloft for OCD? And should I continue to take the Remeron too, or switch it with the Zoloft? Any help would be great! Thanks for responding!

Hi rainbowlight, I too suffer with OCD,anxiety and deppression. I found luvox effective for the OCD but caused chronic fatigue. Just wondering if your doc has tried you on clomipramine-(anafranil) as many still consider it to be the "gold" standard for OCD-anxiety treatment if you are not successful on the newer type meds. Best wishes, Rick

Hi Rick. No, I have not tried Anafranil, but I have been reading alot about it on the net lately. I am definately going to ask my pdoc about it next time I see her. Thanks for the info!

Make sure you don't have subclinical or clinically apparent ADD. SSRIs can worsen concentration to the point it finally becomes noticable to the person for the first time.

Not saying it sounds like you do, just that it would be a shame to miss it.

ADD does not have to have caused poor grades etc as many think. Also commonly associated conditions include bipolar and OCD, sleep problems.
