ADD and anxiety

Posted by JenniferB on March 15, 2002, at 18:15:51

I suffer from inattentive ADD with some hyperactivity, mild OCD, social anxieties, and recurrent debilitating situational anxiety. Currently I'm taking 75 mg. of Effexor once a day and 10 mg. of Ritalin twice a day. Initially, during a bout of situational anxiety so severe that it gave me a depressed affect, I was incorrectly diagnosed with chronic depression and prescribed 75 mg./day of Effexor, which improved my anxiety slightly but did nothing for my ADD symptoms. At once point my Effexor dosage was increased to 150 mg., which just seemed to give me a lot of nervous, almost manic energy. Adding Ritalin (when I was finally diagnosed with ADD), on the other hand, has improved both my anxiety and my ADD symptoms but has tended to exacerbate my OCD symptoms. Any ideas?

Hi Jennifer,

You might try a *tiny* dose of Prozac or Celexa instead of the Effexor (with your Ritalin). I found Prozac or Celexa to be the only two SRI meds (I am including Serzone and Effexor in there) to actually help the inattentiveness (mainly listening ability) and also help with OCD traits. You also might try a low-dose of Neurontin. There has been some success with Neurontin+psychostimulant for ADD, and Neurontin has had some success with OCD symptoms. But, that is just my experience-YMWV.
