Anyone drink coffee to offset the drowsiness effect of their AD? Does it work? Normally I have to be careful because coffee causes panic attacks for me, but since Celexa is supposed to prevent them now, I should be ok right?

Hi,
Coffee and Prozac make me go completely hyper, seems kinda manic. So you might want to watch out.
Good Luck

It never used to work this way, but lately, when I touch caffeine (either in tea, Coke, or coffee) I get an instant awakening from it. I feel REALLY good. Then, of course, I crash REALLY hard. It's starting to make me wonder if I might not benefit from Provigil along with this Luvox and Clonazepam I'm taking, provided I could avoid crashing. I tried the standard p-stims, i.e. dexedrine, ritalin, etc... and they pooped out quickly, and started to lead to crashing. They actually started to make me feel quite fatigued eventually.
I think the reason why I get this response currently from caffeine is because I have reduced my intake of it quite severely over the past year, to the point where I'll go weeks or more without touching it. I don't remember the last time I ever did that in my life. I think I lost my tolerance to it, so that now it has a profound, yet shortlasting effect.
Everybody's different, which in our cases, is somewhat unfortunate.

Hi Ralph,
When I was on SSRIs (all which make me extremely drowsy) I drank so much coffee I could have been swimming in it.Sometimes it would do nothing at all to help, and even make me feel worse. I think those times had to do with low blood sugar -- if that happens now, I drink a protein shake which does seem to help lift me out of "the crash."
I have noticed that a hefty latte -- with 3 shots of espresso -- will boost me out of those lows (sometimes TOO MUCH, and I get pretty jittery, but I don't mind because it's so much better than feeling like a zombie.) I think espresso must be "cleaner" than regular coffee, because it usually helps me out on my really rough days, whereas coffee usually doesn't do the trick (or makes me worse.)
I know that caffeine is supposed to be a bad thing for me, but sometimes it is my only lifeline through the fatigue. My only addiction left!
Take care...
cindy

Yes yes yes!!! This is exactly how I was on Paxil. I was soooo fatigued all the time. I would drink cup after cup of caffeine and sometimes it would just make the fatigue worse (and make my feet feel swollen...). But it wasn't like that at first. At first, Paxil wired me out in a sick way with anxiety and chills and tremor, and it mixed very badly with caffeine. It wasn't until I had been on the Paxil about a month (when the fatigue kicked in) that my caffeine tolorance seemed to go exponential on me.MB

You may benefit from the stimulating effects of buproprion. Your Celexa will boost serotonin once, and buproprion would boost both norepinephrine and dopamine.

That sounds like a great combo - and I've even considered it before. But what I am concerned about is:
1. Even though Celexa causes this extreme lethargy, I have insomnia at night. I'm afraid that anything long-acting would worsen that.
2. I had multiple seizures as a child. I've heard that Wellbutrin is one of the worse for people with history of seizures. That is also why I have avoided Effexor. One other thing - I have fluctuating blood pressure that goes quite high at times.
My GP doesn't seem to be knowledgeable enough about the meds (although is willing to prescribe whatever I want) and my psychiatrist only thinks I need the AD for panic disorder and anxiety. I'm afraid if I mention the depression I've been having that I will be taken off benzodiazepines, and that would really be bad.
What a dilemna...

Do you want to hear something strange. I just started drinking coffee. I have never liked the taste but with my meds I does something and makes me feel better. Especially late in the day when I get shakey, it must be the high level of caff.

I drink coffee every single day with SSRIs. It causes no problems for me whatsoever. None. I love coffee and find that drinking some coffee in the morning makes me so I can focus a little better.
Another good thing about drinking coffee regularly while on SSRIs is that the coffee might help offset some of the dopamine depletion said to occur with longterm SSRI usage. As coffee mildly increases dopamine levels. Heavy coffee drinkers have lower rates of parkinsons disease.

Cool freeging deal! I think I'll fire up the java machine tomorrow and brew up some diesel strength Chock full o nuts. I quit drinking the stuff when I started Celexa and have been having withdrawal headaches the last couple of days. I'm dealing with a mighty migraine right now in fact.

Yes! Yes! Yes!
I'm on Celexa. I do have Wellburtin for an added kick. I'm also on Klonopin for bruxism.
Ergo.. I drink massive amounts of coffee in the morning. I would not face a day without it. I'm totally addicted and I love it. I've been on caffeine since I was a wee lad and perhaps me brain is more accustomed to it than others' brains.
