I am on 80 mg. celexa for major depression and severe anxiety and it isn't working. I'd previously been sort of stable, functional at least, on 40 mg. celexa and 15 mg. adderall. But I went off, and now back on the celexa isn't doing the trick so far ( 4 weeks @ 60 mg., just going up to 80) Next week my pdoc wants me to go back down to 60 mg. celexa and start 37.5 effexor xr. Do people take effexor and ssri's? Thanks.
Edward

Effexor + SSRI is a good combination because it affects serotonin twice and norepinephrine once (and possibly dopamine), thus maximizing your chances at relief from depression. Effexor + SSRI is a common combination.

Thanks again. I am worried about serotonin syndrome, though. 60 mg. celexa and effexor sounds like a lot but I am sure the pdoc knows what he is doing. Celexa by itself also has no side effects for me other that sedation and some of the posts here about effexor scare me. I too reboxetine, a nari, and it gave me the most severe anxiety imaginable, so any noradregnic freaks me out. But I probably have no choice. Thanks again. Edward.

There is absolutely no chance of serotonin syndrom with that combination. Serotonin syndrome in psychiatry is mostly a complication involving MAOIs.

Well, I don't think this is neccesary. You could take Effexor by itself. Anyway, there is no contraindication to combine the two.
