RISPERDAL PROZAC, ANY FEEDBACK????

Posted by blondemomints on November 12, 2001, at 17:57:13

After a month period, my pdoc (& I) decided Zoloft and Topomax wasn't the right combo for me. (Not to mention the worry I had from the potential awful side effects from Topomax...I was having extreme paranoia & hearing voices, etc. I think due to the Zoloft but not sure).

We've decided to put me back on Prozac and add Risperdal.

Here's the new rx:
20 mg Prozac (once a day, a.m.)
.50 mg Risperdal (once, right before bed)

I would love to hear any thoughts about this med combo.
I've also read conflicting reports regarding Risperdal and side effects. One states it can cause "insomnia", the other states it is helpful in "inducing sleep".
One states it will ease "irritability", the other states it may "increase anxiety".

My problem is depression (naturally) but I have a tendency to be moody as well (irritable, withdrawn), etc. But I also seem to get more irritable if my anxiety level is increased!!!!

What are your thoughts on any of this, please?
Thanks,
Robin

Robin,

It seems like most of the atypical psychotic meds have conflicting reports. I tried Risperdal for about a week to augment my AD but had to quit because it really deadened me. I felt absolutely nothing. I was just kind of breathing and doing nothing else. When I switched to Zyprexa I did much better. It helped clear up my obsessive thoughts of suicide and helped me to concentrate better.

Most of the studies that I've seen have involved Zyprexa with Prozac but that is mainly because Lilly makes both of them. You are on a low dose of Risperdal and I would expect that it should help you sleep. Both the Z and Risp helped my sleep.

The Zyprexa also helped quite a bit with my anxiety. I am a firm believer that the AP's can definitely help with ruminating thoughts and anxiety. They seem to act as a mood stabilzer in the right situations.

Some people do well on one and not the other so if the Risp doesn't work out consider the Zyprexa as an alternative.

Good Luck, hope the combo works for you.

Chris

For me, Risperdal made me sleepy when I first started taking it, but within a few weeks I adjusted and it stopped affecting me one way or the other. It hasn't had any effect at all on my anxiety level (very high whether I take it or not), and I'm much less irritable when I'm taking it.

Risperdal Prozac??? here's feedback

I have made several posts about Risperdal as an augmentation for my AD's. I think it is making all the difference for me. I have found that if I take it at night it activates me, so I take mine AM. I take it with Prozac, Pindolol and Ritalin, but the Risperdal is the last thing I added and made the biggest difference. I do 1mg daily. I upped it to that from .5 after the first two months or so. I found that two .5mg tablets were not as good as a single 1mg. These meds are so idiosyncratic. I have been on it for about six months now. I've got quite the cocktail I know, but it took me long enough to arrive at it and it is working for now so I'm sticking with it. Good luck with your efforts.

hmm interesting, i am on the same combo!! apart from the risperdal

had prozac added to pindolol + ritalin today.

but i used prozac in the past, just made me tired irritable disinhibited, but worked for depression, it is also very very activating.

i wonder if risperdal would be worth adding to my combo, i hear these AP's work very differently at really low doses

Also heard good things about Fluanxol
