Serotonin Blood Levels.....What is Normal????

Posted by blondemomints on October 22, 2001, at 18:19:46

I recently had a serotonin blood level done and the outcome was a 43. The scale was like 0-500. Is 43 considered low or normal? What is NORMAL? Does anyone know?

If 43 is considered low, is that why I am depressed?

Any feedback is most appreciated, thanks!

Robin

Blonde - I'm not sure that serotonin blood levels correlate with serotonin brain levels very well. Mostly, serotonin blood levels only measure what is in the platelets. To get an indication of brain levels of serotonin, one would have to have a spinal tap and measure the metabolite of serotonin, 5-HIAA. I am really not sure what a blood level of serotonin really measures. - Cam

I had the blood test done because someone on another online board (shaking her head at her lack of better judgement now) had suggested it.
(Due to depression and a hormonal imbalance)
My doctor's office drew a vial of blood and sent it to a laboratory. They gave me a copy of the results (to take to my psych doctor, at my request).

(psst, I work for the doc's office that drew the blood so they didn't tell me it was prolly a waste 'o time & money as I suspect after reading Cam's comments!)

Thanks for the replies though....you live & learn
and I'll keep coming back here to listen to you all from now on :-)
