Anyone having experience taking Effexor for anxiety and tension ?
I once took 150mg/day of it for that sake. As far as I could think it didn't make me symptom-free. Now, after nothing else helped, I'm reconsidering its use. Does it make any sense to use it in doses >150mg ? I would like to hear from people's experience here... in theory 225mg might prove to be more effective than 150mg, but I suspect this might prove useless in practice. By the way, did anyone here use more than 225 for anxiety&tension ?
Eager to hear,
Jimmy

>My pdoc put me on Effexor to treat comorbid anxiety and depression, so I'm I've got at least a leg in the category you're asking about. Actually, when he was scribbling on his pad he sort of mumbled, "actually, it doesn't do much for depression..." What I've read contradicts his muttered assertion, but what I've experienced comes close to confirming it.
Anyway, to get to your major question: Effexor is an excellent candidate for a dose increase. The people who study these things hypothesize that Effexor works on the serotonin reuptake pump at lower doses (up to about 200mg), and at higher doses the norephinephrine pump as well. If you take about a gram a day, you'll affect the dopamine pump as well, but considering the max recommended dose is 375 q.d....
I really want to write more, but I've got real life calling. But in the mean time, check out www.preskorn.com and in the Columns section look for the one on venlafaxine. It's pretty interesting.
Good luck,
-pm

Effexor for me is great for anxiety but it just don't fix the depression kinda leaves me in a mixed state adding lithium helps so says the mighty doc, kicks the anti-depressant in the ass .

Well, for me (and this is only one person!) Effexor helped with depression but made me *more* anxious! I could not tolerate more than 75mg/day. It made me feel jittery and over-caffeinated.

Wow - you said that your body fluids are like 90% caffeine in order to be awake on 225 mg of Effexor - I gather, then, that Effexor has a HUGE sedating effect on you? Yipes. At anything over 75 mg of EffexorXR I was so overcaffeinated and anxious I was bouncing off the walls! Guess it goes to show how different we all are - here, you need megadose of caffeine to counteract Effexor when the same med was like a caffeine substitute for me!!
