Yay! Off EffexorXR successfully !!

Posted by Janelle on September 15, 2001, at 20:42:16

Finally, I am OFF EffexorXR, having tapered off very slowly. I was only "up" to 75 mg/day (more than that and I was too wired), then went down to 37.5 mg/day and remained on that for weeks. Yesterday saw pdoc and she said it would be okay to just stop the EffexorXR (not add any other SRI) because 37.5 mg/day is such a low dose, that going off that shouldn't have an adverse (withdrawal effect). Well, so far so good, and I feel confident it will remain so.

This is the FIRST time in YEARS that I will NOT be on an SRI a-d; pdoc is leery to put me on another SRI a-d (I've been on quite a few over time) because of mania problems; she also thinks Lamictal, Zyprexa and Klonopin may be "all" I need; time will tell.

I have successfully (SO FAR) tapered from 300mg to 150mg with few side effects. I was really irritable for a couple of days and really tired. I am also titrating up on Wellbutrin SR--250mg a day now. I beleive that has helped.

I am happy for you...it must be a good feeling!!

Hi James,

Thanks for your concern. I had been on EffexorXR for a few months (no higher than 75mg/day) and have now been off it *only* a few days, but so far NOTHING in the way of withdrawal symptoms. I think that tapering so slowly (I was at 37.5mg a day for weeks!) helped. I was worried about just stopping it without adding some other SSRI, but my pdoc said I was at such a low dose for such a long time that it would be okay to just stop.
Thanks again for your concern.

Hi, I have been very slowly tapering off 225 mg of Effexor XR for about 2 months.
I am down to about 90 mgs. I take a few granules out at a time and slowly taper or stay
on a certain about for a week. The main problem I am having right now is crying.
Of course, there is a lot to cry about. I just saw navy troops leaving their families on tv and
it was very sad. I am very emotional, but on
Effexor, I didn't cry hardly at all. I think it shut down a lot of emotions, besides depression
and anxiety. It was a relief for awhile. Another problem has been body aches like the flu. I have
arthritis and on Effexor, I had some relief. I tend to catastrophize (if that is the right spelling?).
Effexor has helped me, but reading these posts I got worried. The main reason I am quitting is I have
no insurance and it would cost me about $250.00 for my prescription. I just don't have that kind of extra money.
The Dr. I had left and another Dr. will not get me medicine through
the Patient Assistance Program. So I have to quit. I am hoping nothing bad happens. I am trying to
deal with my emotions on my own. I have been on medications for depression for 16 years. I have also been trying to
get disability for about 4 years with no success. My panic attacks had me disabled at one point.
Thanks, PK
