Zyprexa side effect - speed?

Posted by Collete on August 22, 2001, at 10:38:52

Last night was my 5th night on 2.5mg Zyprexa and it is finally working on getting and keeping me asleep. I take a pharmacopia of other meds to get to sleep with (Xanax, Benedryl and Soma) that I am now going to start to wean myself off of. This morning I have been very jittery....like I am on a caffine high or something. I feel like I need to slow down. Is this just a coincidence or can this come from the Zyprexa(whih is obviously now getting built up in my system)?
Otherwise, mentally I still feel really well and am loving this Zyprexa. I will address the appetite stimulation in another post.
Thank you, Collette

Collette, I had typed out a longish response to your thread here but it didn't get posted. Sorry.

My basic message is that NO, I do NOT think Zyprexa is causing your feelings of jitteryness and caffeination. I had those feelings as I titrated up on EffexorXR, and could only tolerate 75 mg/day (as opposed to the "average" dose of 150 mg/day).

ANd now that I'm tapering off the EffexorXR, my first day on 37.5 mg the jitteryness and feeling of caffeination returned (Thankfully it was only that one day).

So, I would guess that if you have been decreasing your other sleep meds, esp. benzos which can be addictive, you may be getting rebound jitters from doing that. Zyprexa is for CALMING racing thoughts, enducing drowsiness and sleep, and I've never heard or read of it causing jitteryness, even as a side effect. Anything is possible, but I tend to doubt Zyprexa = speed! This is only my humble opinion, though it's based on weeks of "experience" with Zyprexa. The side effects I got were that it did knock me out the first time I took it and I had dry mouth from it for a few days, but that was it. No jitters whatsoever.

Now I'm finding a slight hangover effect in the mornings because I'm having to get up earlier. I may need to switch from Lite coffee to regular!

I hope this clarifies that initial response from me???

Thanks for clearing things up!
Perhaps it was just a random thing.
I haven't started tapering off my other meds yet, but will start tonight with 25 instead of 50 mg of benedryl. Collette

the benedryl can interact with certain medications causing racing thoughts and hyperness read the box i think you will find a warning about it also cold medicines will do the same thing when combined with our types of medication becarefull could end up putting you in the hospital

Well, I have been taking the 50mgs of benedryl for YEARS, but it could be interacting with the Zyprexa. I triple checked these meds with my pdoc, so I don't think I am in dangerthough. I have already cut back to one benedryl and am trying to reduce the meds that I have to take to sleep. Thank you for your response. Collette
