any problems to up Effexor dose 3 days early?

Posted by adamie on August 11, 2001, at 17:02:56

hi. i am sick of this depression which can be extremely difficult at times. all i can do is wait to get better.

I am on effexor XR 37.5mg once a day. I am 18 and 53kg. Perhaps my weight, me being little is why my pdoc put me on such a low starting dose. I need relief as soon as possible.

I was suppossed to take 37.5mg for the first 7 days then 75mg the seond week.

I am probably going to up the dosage on the 5th day (tomorrow) instead of the 8th to 75mg. Perhaps this will lead to some relief earlier. of course i will probably have to increase again later.

so far i have had no side effects it seems from the effexor except yesterday i felt a mild strange feeling in my throat. oh and also i am more tired and sleepy. so i feel upping the dose a few days early will be no problem. my pdoc is gone for a few days now so i will do this all by myself. this is probably a silly post as there should be no problems. i'm just trying to pass the time. i just hope to be better soon.

does me having a small weight indicate I would naturally need less of an anti depressant doseage than most other people generally speaking? or does it not work that way? thanks for reading

Patience, patience, patience! At 18 I believe you may have a hard time understanding what I mean. (I was there before, though it is hard to believe.) Anit-depressant medications take about six to eight weeks to really kick in.

Cam or someone else will be able to answer your specific question better then myself.

You've just started the effexor. Once of the startup side-effects is that it makes you jittery. I can't remember how long this lasted.

I'm just curious if you had tried any other anti-depressant type medications before effexor.

Are you sleeping okay?

I forgot to ask about caffeine. Do you drink or eat stuff with caffeine? I think effexor intensifies the effect. Probably good to cut back on any products containing caffeine.

Just one of my many opinions ...

I took Paxil for 24 days and it made my lacking concentration worse and also I seemed to lack emotions which I also did before the paxil. So the paxil generally felt like it wasn't improving me at all and even making me worse. I felt kind of numb on it. hard to remember.

so I stopped and 4 days after I was feeling better. 5th day much better. i was feeling decent and old interests returned with emotions also. this lasted for 5 days then it got suddenly worse. much worse. then it went up a bit. and stayed like that. I was minorly able to enjoy things. then it was getting worse again. I was beggining to get really desperate. And my pdoc was back from vacation and she gave me effexor.

with this depression i have been sleeping well for the exception when my depression was extremely torturous. I am sleeping better than I have when I was perfectly happy. This is because the depression kind of makes me brain dead. my thinking ability is extremely effected. therefor when I go to bed I cant think of much and just fall asleep. when I was perfectly happy I had a very active mind and would always imagine my fiance and other things and therefor would have a bit of a natural insomnia which i didn't mind at all. I liked that about me. that i had an active mind. i need to be that way again.

me will look. thanks for replying. i will try to stick with this effexor. my mom today told me she thinks it's making me worse. i said i was getting worse before the effexor. she said i was not like this. perhaps maybe it is having a possible worsening effect. I guess I will see. hopefully this med will work well.

adamie,

If you're tolerating the side-effects okay, you shouldn't have any problems going up to 75mg early, and from there up to 150mg within a few days. My pdoc told me that Effexor isn't even effective (in the vast majority of people) for depression at doses below 150mg. You might have to (as I think I might) go up to 225 or 300mg before you start to feel truly well. Venlafaxine doesn't have much effect on norephinephrine reuptake until you're taking 225mg+ anyhow, and I know you've hypothesized in the past that your symptoms would be better treated by noradrenergic drugs.

Good luck, hang in there, and remember: mothers often fear change (even for the better :) ).

thanks for the reply. i dont have enough supply to move up past 75mg so i will just have to stay on 75 until August 20th when I get a new prescription. 75mg i will start tomorrow. mild ringing in my left ear happened 4 times today. kind of quiet and goes away quickly. i wish i was started at a higher dose. i could have been up to 150mg by now. but instead i'll have to manage with the 75mg for now. i got hope i will get better sooner or later. take care

I had a laugh when I saw this. Adamine I'm 34, been married 15 years, have three children, etc. Last fall I became worse (your depression sounds the same as mine) and my doctor gave me a prescription for effexor. I never mentioned it to my mother. Once I was feeling better, many months later, I mentioned it to her. Now she keeps asking if I should be lowering the dose etc. Mothers!! You can't live with them and you miss them dearly when they go on holidays.

Here's a joke about moms: A daughter is visiting her mother. She's in bed reading, her mom comes in and tells her it's time to turn the light out. The daughter is in her 60's and the mother is in her 80's.

BEST WISHES
Willow
