Alcohol and Medications-a bad mix?

Posted by Kingfish on August 1, 2001, at 18:14:45

Several times there have been posts asking if it's really O.K. to drink alcohol while taking medications. Obviously meds vary, but for the most part it SEEMS (please note I am using that term here to absolve myself from any further posts saying I told people to mix alcohol and drugs) to be O.K. to have a drink while taking prescriptions. Except, of course, for the long-term effects.

I have continued to drink while taking both AD's and mood stabilizers, sometimes to excess, sometimes for several days in a row.

Well, it's finally becoming clear to me how this interferes with your "recovery."

I'm starting to feel better on average, except for some lingering side effects such as SEDATION, ug, and when I drink now, even a glass or two, it upsets my mood. I actually feel worse. Especially the next day or two.

So, my humble observation is, if your meds are working, it may be that the need to self-medicate actually does cease. It doesn't mean the habit does. But for that, I'm thinking of switching to smoking.

Just an observation.

(Probably should be in Social Babble - wasn't sure).

Just a few comments.
1.) As an alcoholic, I justified my drinking as self-medication for my depression. When I quit drinking, an amazing fact came to light: I was depressed because I drank, not the other way around.

2.) Last year, my son's best friend died in his sleep when he aspirated (drowned in vomit) after drinking and taking Ativan. There was not a lethal amount of alcohol or medication in his system, but the Ativan repressed his body's natural involuntary response to wake up or turn over when he began to choke.

As best as you can, practice moderation in all things.
